HOLIDAY PARTY
CITY COLLEGE
WARRIORS PROJECT
Issue #59
November 2013

On November 5th, WE WON a battle against the rampant greed-fueled development of the kind of housing San Francisco does not need. Props B & C lost big - but the struggle to keep our city affordable for the non-rich is far from over.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, and read on to see what's coming up in the next month for PHDC and its allies.

ABOUT CITY COLLEGE

Support is growing for saving the CCSF we know and love

Early this month, PHDC members heard CCSF Trustee Rafael Mandelman present his Resolution in Support of City College. The Club passed it unanimously, then signed on to the one the California Democratic Party passed over the weekend at its Executive Board meeting in Millbrae. Yesterday, the Save CCSF Coalition held a very well-attended and successful fund-raiser and rally (rousing chant led by Hene Kelly!) at SF Democratic Party Queen Jane Morrison's home.

Three lawsuits have now been filed against the legitimacy of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC)'s move to yank accreditation from City College - by City Attorney Dennis Herrera, by the California Federation of Teachers, and by the Save CCSF Coalition. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson has requested that the ACCJC re-accredit CCSF. The U.S. Department of Education has informed the ACCJC that their own accreditation is at stake because they are out of compliance with DOE regulations.

And now, since our Club encourages the airing of possibly differing points of view:

Dr. Arthur Tyler
, the new Chancellor of CCSF appointed by Special Trustee Robert Agrella (himself appointed by California Community Colleges Chancellor Brice Harris), will appear at a meeting of the Noe Valley Democratic Club to discuss the issues confronting City College and its prospects in the accreditation debacle.
The meeting will be co-sponsored by San Francisco for Democracy, the Upper Noe Neighbors, and PHDC.

WHEN: Thursday, December 5 at 7:30pm
WHERE: St Philips Church, 725 Diamond St betw 24th & Elizabeth

THE WARRIORS & THE WATERFRONT
Agnos & Welts Both sides spoke at PHDC in June..
...and the exchange between former Mayor Art Agnos and Warriors President & Chief Operating Officer Rick Welts was quite lively, but the Club has not taken an official position on the proposed development. Since at this point a ballot measure seems likely, expect us to take it up again in 2014.

On the Con side: An article on Agnos's "crusade" appeared in the Chronicle Friday. To get updates from the San Francisco Waterfront Alliance, sign up on their web site.

On the Pro side: On Nov. 12, the Warriors presented their revised project design to the Port Commission's Piers 30-32 Citizens Advisory Committee, whose next meeting is Dec. 2, 6:30-8:30pm at Pier 1. The Piers 30-32 Project page has official, glowing updates from the City.
