Greetings!
San Francisco's Municipal Election is November 5, 2013. Yes, the three citywide officers up for election or reelection are running unopposed - but that's no reason not to take advantage of a great opportunity to meet them face-to-face, find out what they've done and intend to do, and ask them anything you want. Come to PHDC's September 3rd endorsement meeting! Read on for details.
Joni Eisen, President
Potrero Hill Democratic Club

We are returning to the (now beautifully renovated) scene of last year's super-fun celebration - Dogpatch Saloon, 3rd St at 20th St. It's a party for the community and a fundraiser for the Club - and we are excited to be the first community group to hold an event at the new venue! There will be a live jazz trio with fantastic local musicians, great food from club members and local eateries, and lots of tempting items for your bidding pleasure from the wonderful merchants and artists of Potrero Hill & Dogpatch. No-host bar. Admission is free and open to the public. If you would like to solicit or make a donation for the Silent Auction (local - Potrero Hill or Dogpatch only), please download a donor form here. Call Joni at 648-6740 for more information. Updates: What our allies are doing
| | City College. No Wall on the Waterfront. California DISCLOSE Act.
SAVE CCSF. Last week the U.S. Dept of Education sent the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) a letter finding fault with the accrediting process for City College - appearance of conflict of interest by having the commission president's husband on an evaluation team for the school; lack of faculty members on evaluation teams; providing vague instructions for compliance. The commission was put on notice to comply - ironically, the same thing the ACCJC itself did to CCSF last month. This past week, interesting developments for CCSF have continued: On Tuesday, students staged a rally and sit-in, ending with arrests, at City Hall to challenge the mayor to step up in defense of this incredibly crucial institution. He did not. But since then, others have: Wednesday, the CA Legislature approved a state audit of the accrediting commission, which should take 6 months to complete. Thursday, City Attorney Herrera filed suit against the accrediting commission to block them from closing CCSF. Go Dennis! A good place to keep up with the latest on the City College crisis is the Facebook page of CCSF Trustee (and great friend of PHDC) Rafael Mandelman. NO WALL ON THE WATERFRONT (now No on B, No on C campaign) will have a party Thursday, September 5, 5 to 8pm at the Ramp (855 Terry A Francois Blvd) in support of the campaign, featuring former SF Mayor Art Agnos. PHDC Secretary (and Potrero Boosters President) J. R. Eppler is a co-host, along with several other PHDC members. Please RSVP to J.R.: president@potreroboosters.org. CA DISCLOSE Act (SB 52). After it was passed in the State Senate, Author Senator Mark Leno declared SB 52, which would mandate that the top 3 funders of any political ad be clearly revealed on the ad itself, a 2-year bill. This means it will go before the Assembly in 2014 when the Democratic super-majority is again in place following special elections. So, to respect people's time and energy, volunteers please take a break until a vote is approaching next year. Check the local SF Working Group web site to see what's happening.

AUGUST MEETING FOLLOWUP
| | Panel: more sunlight at City Hall
City Attorney Dennis Herrera, Board of Supervisors President David Chiu, and CitiReport.com editor Larry Bush (r. to l. above) engaged and enlightened the crowd with a lively discussion, moderated by PHDC Secretary J.R. Eppler (far right), about the local ethics reform legislation introduced by Chiu and Herrera. Panelists and audience members alike cited examples of why such legislation is needed to tighten the rules and shine a light on activities of City Hall lobbyists, should-be (registered as) lobbyists, and other influence-peddlers like permit expediters and developers. Photo by Anand Singh. Also at the meeting, members voted to sponsor the Potrero Hill Festival Saturday, October 19 on 20th Street. The $500 sponsorship includes mention in festival publicity, as well as a table at the Festival (look for our popular pride-in-the-'hood t-shirts: "Potrero Hill 94107," plus the new "Dogpatch 94107"). And the warm glow of knowing we're doing the right thing by supporting our beloved Neighborhood House. |
