Greetings!

The Affordable Care Act, affectionately known as "Obamacare," will be fully enacted come January 1, 2014. The new California Health Benefit Exchange will be open for enrollment before that - in October. What will be the impact on you and yours? Find out at our next meeting.

NEXT PHDC MEETING TUESDAY, MAY 7th
Affordable Care Act logo Health care reform is coming!

We are excited to welcome a wide-ranging panel of experts:
  • Patricia McGinnis, Executive Director of California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform
  • Bonnie Preston, MSPH, Outreach & Policy Specialist at the US Department of Health & Human Services
  • Sumi Sousa, Officer of Policy Development and Coverage Programs at San Francisco Health Plan

The discussion will include: basics of the Affordable Care Act; California's first-in-the-nation Health Benefit Exchange, through which individuals and small businesses can compare plans and buy insurance; possible effects of reform on seniors and other vulnerable populations; federal reform in relation to San Francisco's existing health plans; and, of course, your particular concerns.

You are invited to participate in what promises to be an illuminating and timely conversation.

WHEN: Tuesday, May 7 at 7pm
WHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro St

April meeting followup
The future of our water + other updates

Conversation-starters Jennifer Clary of Clean Water Action, Ellen Levin of SF Public Utilities Commission (Water), and Adam Scow of Food & Water Watch opened the program, followed by breakout groups and a final Q&A session. They spoke of water issues in our city and in the state, including: the dangers fracking in California; ways that San Francisco is slowly mitigating its practice of treating rainwater runoff as if it were wastewater; chemicals in drinking water in other parts of the state; a proposal to tax fertilizer to offset the contamination it causes.

Earlier in the meeting, PHDC members updated the group on past topics: the CA DISCLOSE Act (first State Senate committee hearing is tomorrow 4/30), gun safety legislation (outrageous disappointment at the federal level, but the states are making progress), and saving City College. Click on each subject for details of what's happening now.
Upcoming Sunday, June 9th
 Sunday Streets Bayview/Dogpatch!

We love Sunday Streets. PHDC members will be out there again with a table, probably near Esprit Park - registering voters, selling 94107 t-shirts and bragging about our Club. Join us for car-free fun June 9th from 11 to 4.
