Greetings!

In our never-ending quest to remain relevant, PHDC has a new policy: Issues taken up at recent meetings will not disappear. We will continue to update our members and friends on related events and actions, because saving our democracy demands it.

March meeting followup
SAVING CITY COLLEGE
Panel and discussion could've gone on much longer

Special guests - Trustees Rafael Mandelman and Steve Ngo, faculty member Rodger Scott, student leader Inder Grewal - presented sometimes-conflicting views of the accreditation crisis, its causes and possible solutions. There were many more questions than there was time to discuss them.

Recommendations from various panelists included supporting CCSF at the March 14th rally (see below), and keeping informed by attending Board of Trustees meetings when possible - e.g., to testify against the possible closure of Fort Mason Art Center. You can find the meetings online at streaming media and video archive. The next Board meeting is March 28th. For those serious about digging for the fiscal facts, Trustee Ngo has provided a link to the Sept. 2012 FCMAT report (Fiscal Crisis & Management Assistance Team, CA School Information Services).

CCSF rally After the speakers left, Club members had a further discussion, and voted to endorse and encourage people to attend the Save CCSF Rally Thursday March 14 at 4pm at Civic Center. Rally info here. If you would like stand with the PHDC banner (the one at the top of this email - plus a handmade sign), email Hilary.

LAWYERS, GUNS & MONEY (more updates)
Recent violence-prevention legislation

Some praiseworthy actions
by our lawmakers:

Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee, with the strong advocacy of Senator Feinstein, voted 10-8 to approve universal background checks for all gun purchases; next comes the full U.S. Senate vote.

● Senator Leno introduced SB 140 to allocate more resources towards tracing and confiscating illegally-possessed weapons.

Senator Yee authored two bills, SB 47 and SB 108, that would strengthen California's assault weapons ban.

Assemblyman Ammiano
introduced AB 500 to tightens the state's laws regarding both safe storage of firearms and regulation of gun sales.

Assemblyman Ting introduced AB 231 to require gun owners to purchase liability insurance.

Supervisor Cohen
introduced two ordinances, to require reporting ammunition sales of over 500 rounds, and to prohibit possession of police- or military-use ammunition.

Please continue to encourage and thank these leaders for their efforts to reduce gun violence; it's really important that they hear from you. See sidebar for phone numbers, and links to web sites through which you can email. You can sign on to support the President's violence-prevention proposals through the link there too.

PHDC in the news: Vice-President Monisha Mustapha's piece on the Club's Feb. 7th Gun Control forum was published in this month's issue of The Potrero View. Read it here.

CA DISCLOSE Act

California DISCLOSE Act, SB 52, is on its way - may the 3rd time be a charm!

PHDC was a co-sponsor of the Bay Area California DISCLOSE Act 2013 campaign kickoff in Palo Alto this past Saturday, which featured rousing speeches by SB 52 joint authors Senators Mark Leno and Jerry Hill, Congresswoman Anna Eshoo and others. The next day, SF volunteers gathered signatures of support at Sunday Streets by the Ferry Building.

If you want to join this worthy effort to mandate immediate, on-ad disclosure of the true funders of political ads, first of all - even if you've signed in previous years - please sign the specific SB 52 petition online. Than come to the first 2013 SF Working Group meeting to pass the DISCLOSE Act:
Saturday, March 16th, 1 to 3pm
Potrero Branch Library
1616 - 20th St between Arkansas & Connecticut

The first Committee hearing in Sacramento is the Senate Elections Committee, most likely on April 2nd (field trip to pack the chamber with supporters!). For more info: CleanandFairSF.org

NEXT PHDC MEETING TUESDAY, APRIL 2nd
Another lively meeting on a current topic

...yet to be announced. The Executive Committee meets on or around March 18th, to plan.

WHEN: Tuesday, April 2nd at 7pm
WHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House

PHDC'S EMAILS AGAIN WIN "ALL-STAR" AWARD
Third year in a row

We wanted to share the news and express our gratitude to you, our loyal readers, for receiving this honor -  it's "an annual designation that only 10%" of Constant Contact customers achieve for their "stellar" use of the service.

Anyway, PHDC's emails and events are created with you our members and supporters in mind, so thank you for engaging and interacting with us. We look forward to continuing the relationship through 2013!
