200TH ANNIVERSARY

FIRST METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN COLUMBUS

Anniversary celebration

The first Methodist Episcopal (ME) Church in the City of Columbus was the Zion ME Church which was organized on December 20, 1813, two hundred years ago this year.

It stood on Town Street between High and Third Streets - almost in the middle of Columbus Commons, site of the former City Center.

We are trying to identify churches that have roots that go back to Zion ME; later

known as Town Street ME and still later, after relocating to Bryden Road, known as First

ME, before closing in 1968.

Our goal is to have a reunion in the fall of 2013 of all

churches which trace their roots to Zion/Town Street/First Church, which will be a

celebration of the 200th anniversary of that church's founding.

Does your church have roots that go back to Zion ME church? In the same way that families have a lineage; so do churches. For example, our church, Broad Street UMC in downtown Columbus, is the grand daughter of Zion ME Church.. That is because our mother church, Wesley Chapel ME Church was the daughter of Zion ME Church.

It happened this way: Wesley Chapel was formed in 1846 by members of Zion; Broad

Street was formed in 1875 by members of Wesley Chapel. So, Broad Street is the second

generation descendant of Zion. We believe that Bexley UMC and King Avenue UMC are also possible descendants of Zion/Town Street/First.

The following churches in Columbus in the early 1900s, most of which are now closed, also trace their roots to Zion/Town Street/First. If your church was formed from

one of these, then it is also a descendant of Zion/Town Street/First, and can be a part of this reunion. All of these were Methodist Episcopal Churches except as noted.

Clinton/Clintonville(1839)

If your church has lineage back to Zion/Town Street/First, please contact us.

Crossroads UMC in Need of Gently Used UM Hymals and The Faith We Sing

Crossroads UMC is in need of additional UM Hymnals as well as Faith We Sing songbooks.

If any church has excess of either of these that are in good condition and not being used and would appreciate the opportunity "clean up some clutter" while helping another church be good stewards, we would be willing to take them off your hands. Our current hymnals are blue, but we would willingly accept any color hymnals you might. We would only ask that they not be embossed with a church name on the cover.

If you have hymnals or song books you would like to part with, contact
Rev. Jay Anderson at Crossroad UMC (614) 274-4920, or by email at jayanderson1959@gmail.com.

News from United Methodist Community Ministries

UM Community Ministries

Hanging with Jesus at Asbury North UMC

Your apportionment dollars enable a variety of children and youth ministries to take place at Asbury North UMC. Kenya Cummings is the coordinator for both the Saturday and Sunday programs. She writes about the progress they are making in this new ministry:

  • A young mother now brings her young children to worship on a regular basis.  She has two elementary school students and regularly brings children that she serves as their caregiver. She has connected with one of our volunteers who is also a young mother. These two women support and encourage one another. We are impacting children and their families.
  • Church of the Redeemer UMC and Whitehall UMC are joining us in creating youth events for the children and communities. This is a strategic move because many of our youth attend similar schools.  These churches are also building their youth and children's programs with a focus on outreach.
  • Youth helper- a senior at West High School has begun to regularly attend our church. He is a grandson of a member in the church and from the neighborhood. He volunteers and completes a task work list each week. He is attending United Methodist Men meetings. He is learning different skills (filling out job applications, creating resumes and phone etiquette).   He sets up breakfast and assists with clean up.
  • We are still serving breakfast. Most Sundays the youth (middle and high school) out number the Sunday school class.  We have found that breakfast is a great time for relationship building. Children and youth are most likely to open up over a meal.  There is an eighth grader we see every two weeks. He comes with friends. He lives in the neighborhood. Hanging with Jesus is his outlet for leadership. He loves to be an assistant. He encourages the younger kids to listen and have fun. He is applying for Freedom School.  We hope this experience will allow him to connect more of his peers.  He is looking forward to the youth group events. The woman who brings him is excited to see him grow in faith. He is excited about the idea of joining the church. Attending Hanging with Jesus and Sunday morning worship are some of his only opportunities to strong male role models.

Thank God for Kenya's strong leadership and for this rich ministry, made possible through your faithful giving!
