Westgate UMC Seeks Partners to Assist with Celebrate Recovery Ministry
Raised Hands

Lives are being transformed, people who have not been in faith for many years are finding hope through Jesus and those in need of nourishment for the body are being fed.

Westgate UMC, in the hilltop continues to seek out those struggling to find healing and wholeness in relationships through the Celebrate! ministry

However the need for partners is ever increasing.  How can you and your congregation help?

Remembering how Jesus invites us to offer a cup of cool water to the thirsty and feed the hungry, we are in great need of a few more partners for meal preparation and service.  Just two or three meals per year would be greatly appreciated.

Could you and/or your community provide a meal for the Sunday community?

Celebrate! schedule is Sundays -- 11:00 am worship, 11:45 am small group, 12:30 pm free community meal.

Is your heart drawn into compassion for those that have less?

Society of St. Andrews

"Superheroes of the Faith" - SoSA's VBS Mission Program is designed to be used either as a stand-alone program or as a mission emphasis to compliment your church's Vacation Bible School program.

Free download and all details can be found at www.endhunger.org/vbs.htm.

Each day, your students will be introduced to a different biblical character who did amazing things for God. "Superheroes of the Faith" is a complete VBS program that includes a Bible story, and related game, craft, snack, and music ideas. In addition, each day your VBS students will meet a modern-day superhero who is doing great things for God's Kingdom, and your students will learn how they can use their hands to help feed God's hungry children.

Besides the fun and educational aspects of this mission project, the goal for each VBS is to raise enough money, through student offerings, for 1,000 pounds of fresh produce to end up on the plates of hungry children and adults. At 6¢ cents a pound, that's a goal of $60. The fresh food will be donated by SoSA to feeding agencies across the nation to feed hungry children and adults. Because SoSA is such an economical ministry, we can provide all of this food for about 6¢ a pound! It's a simple, effective way to obey Jesus' command to feed the hungry while being good stewards of our nation's abundance.

All materials are free and available now. There is no obligation. You can order your materials online at www.endhunger.org/vbs.htm

Or contact The Rev. Jennifer Vestal Moore at 800-333-4597; email church@endhunger.org.

Come and join the VBS team and be a Superhero for God!

Retirement Celebration for Jim Waugh
Jim's retirement 1
Administrative Asst Carol Wilson and Dist Superintendent Barb Sholis present Jim Waugh with a collection of letters and greetings on the occasion of his retirement.

The CAS District Conference featured a retirement celebration for Jim Waugh.  Jim has served as the Assistant to the Superintendent of the Capitol Area South District for seven years.  He will conclude thirty-eight years under appointment as a pastor in the West Ohio Conference at the end of June.

The district conference was held at the Warehouse 839 location of the Hilliard United Methodist Church.  Before being named as the Assistant to the Superintendent in 2006, Jim served the Hilliard UMC, and he, along with Pastor Lori Lossie, was instrumental in the launch of the Warehouse 839 ministry location.

Preceding the retirement celebration, the Rev. Barb Sholis preached her last message to the district conference in impending move to the office of the Assistant to the Bishop.  Barb and the Rev. Chip Koch, chair of the District Committee on Ordained Ministry, recognized those clergy who would be commissioned or ordained.  They included David To (provisional elder) and Jason Wellman (full member elder).  Clergy who are retiring and associated with the district were also recognized.  They included: Cheryl Enders, Carl Martin, Jim Waugh, Anita Wood, and David Ziegel.

Thanks to the CAS District from Jim Waugh
Thank You 1 In whatever language I could express it, I was overwhelmed by the celebration of my retirement at the district conference. Although I knew something was up, I was pretty much kept in the dark concerning details for this event.

I want to thank Barb Sholis and Carol Wilson along with Pastor Karen Muntzing and the folks at Hilliard UMC for putting on the event in my honor.  I also want to thank John Edgar, Hank Stringer, and David Ziegel for their kind and affirming words about my ministry and about the relationship that I have had with each of these colleagues over the years.

I was deeply touched by the messages that clergy and laity from the district and others who offered written greetings in the collection of letters that I received.  I will read those over many times and remember you.  Thanks also for the generous love gift.

I grateful to God for all of God's mercies toward me over these years of my ministry.  I am also thankful for the opportunity that I have had to work with so many wonderful folks called "United Methodists" across the years of my ministry.

Jim's Tool Box pic MissionInsite Now Offers Detailed Information on Likely Religious Beliefs, Preferences, and Practices for a Defined Study Area

One of the shortcomings in the myriad of data available in MissionInsite was the lack of details around religious beliefs, preferences, and practices.  There is a wealth of data on almost every possible topic in MissionInsite, but there were only five questions that generally dealt with religious beliefs in the ExecutiveInsite or FullInsite report. To remedy the lack of information about religious viewpoints and preferences in a study area, MissionInsite has initiated a study they call "The Quadrennium Project."

In this Tool Box, Jim discusses the "Quad" Report that is a new option for predefined reports of target study area in MissionInsite.

Freedom Schools Springing Up and Getting Results!

Freedom Schools, providing free summer enrichment for grades K-12, are springing up across the district, including a new rural Freedom School in northwestern Licking County! This is possible through a partnership of Croton, Alexandria and Johnstown United Methodist Churches. Join me in being a reader at a Freedom School: if you would like to go read in Licking County, contact the Rev Eva Marie Wolfe at crotonumc@gmail.com.

Here is a story from Summit UMC in Columbus:

In our Sequoia After School Program, all 40 children in the program now have a Mentor. The children are really adapting well to the new curriculum that originated from our summer literacy program. They enjoy integrated reading curriculum, soft learning skills and journaling. One challenge is now that we have a reliable driver, we need to find a reliable way to transport all the children to the after school program in a timely manner.

There is a junior high girl who has been kicked out of school three times this school year. She is a very angry and loud girl. An older regular volunteer decided to take her on as a Mentor. At first the relationship was very uncomfortable: an older calm woman and a younger feisty girl. However, now the junior high girl is smiling more, learning how to solve problems without fighting and feeling better about herself, all because this older lady took her under her wings and showed her a different way to communicate. Please pray that we solve our transportation struggles and  as we move from afterschool to our summer Freedom School program.

For more info about the Summit UMC Freedom School contact the Rev. April Blaine at aprilblaine914@gmail.com. There are also several other Freedom Schools through the Shalom Zone, as well as through Broad St UMC, Church for All People, and Maynard Ave UMC.

Pastor Aaron Brown Represents CAS District in Blessing of the Stone Service in San Luis Potosi
blessing of the stone
Pastor Ruben and Pastor Aaron Brown lay the cornerstone while Bishop Garcia of the Oriental Conference former pastor of the church Pastor Lorenzo look on.

On April 27-28, Pastor Aaron Brown represented the CAS District at the official "Blessing of the Stone" service for the Templo de Vida y Esperanza (Temple of Life and Hope) in San Luis Potosi.  Similar to a cornerstone laying, the service marked the beginning of the construction of the Methodist Church building in San Luis Potosi.  The congregations of the CAS District have contributed $20,000 to aid with the construction of the facility. When completed the church will house the only Methodist congregation in the city of 1 million people.

Click HERE to read Aaron's report and to learn how you and your congregation can continue to assist the people of the Temple of Life and Hope as they serve the Lord in San Luis Potosi.  For example help is still needed in funds to build the church building.  While the district will no longer sponsor work teams to San Luis, individual churches are needed to send teams to assist the people of the church in the construction of the new facility.
