Jim's Tool Box
Jim's Tool Box pic Changes in the 2012 Book of Discipline Affecting the Local Church

The United Methodist Publishing House has published the 2012 edition of  The Book of Discipline.  In case you are not aware,
The Book of Discipline is the basic rulebook that governs the United Methodist Church from the local church through the District and Annual Conference to the General/global level of the UMC.

In this article, Jim takes a look at some of the changes in the new Discipline that are included in the local church administration and local church trustees sections of the rulebook.  In addition, he reviews the various electronic versions of The Book of Discipline that are available through Cokesbury and Amazon.

News from United Methodist Community Ministries

UM Community Ministries

Widening the Welcome

Widening the Welcome is 2013 theme for Capitol Area Community Ministries. Yesterday, Anna Borsick from our Job Creation Task Force and I preached at William St UMC on this theme and we are happy to bring that message to your church as well! Anna has a wonderful testimony!  Let me know if you are interested. See below a story about widening the welcome- send us your stories as well.

Magnetic Springs UMC is a small membership church in a rural village in Union County. The church has been seeking ways to widen the welcome over the years. In July Pastor Judy arrived and she started going door to door in the village and building new relationships with the people. Believing miracles could happen, they started having popsicle parties and hot dog roasts for the kids. New people are coming to the church! You never know how small acts of kindness can make a big difference to the entire future of the church! The administrative council chair and Pastor Judy asked for help from Community Ministries so we gave them a $500 grant to further their media and youth ministry.

Like many rural communities there are few recreational activities for those who live there. I called a couple of nearby churches so see if they could help obtain playground equipment and help with a community garden. I am hoping this turns into a ripple effect. Miracles can happen in the smaller churches in out of the way communities.

Community Ministries is fully committed to widening the welcome whether it's in the smallest rural communities or the poorest urban communities. We are trying to model widening the welcome ourselves by going out to the far edges of the district and offering events and resources to churches that may feel cut off. I believe in doing so we will see Jesus' Face. We will find that picture of Jesus composed of a wide diversity of people and they will be the ones who help us grow the church.

How will you commit to widening the welcome in 2013? How will you seek out the lost, the disenfranchised, the heartbroken, the disabled? How will you embark on this continuous conversion journey? How will you decide to be an intentional learning community? How will you find and embrace Jesus in the people you have trouble accepting - how will you invite them in and deepen the welcome once they walk through your door? What is your next faithful step?

Blessings,

Beth

A Note from the Editor
Jim's Tool Box pic Jim Waugh Will Retire on June 30, 2013
I wanted to let the readers of this newsletter know that I have requested the retired relationship with the West Ohio Conference effective July 1, 2013.  It has been my privilege to serve as the Assistant to the Superintendent of the Capitol Area South District during the past seven years.  I have appreciated the opportunity to work with clergy colleagues and laity across the district.  It has been my privilege to serve under full time appointment in the West Ohio Conference since 1975 (under Bishop Gerald Ensley) to the current time.  I give thanks to God for the people with whom I have served and the places in which I have had the opportunity to serve.  It has been my privilege in some small way to work with others in sharing the good news of God's love for all people in a world that so desperately needs that message today.
