West Ohio Conference Announces Flood Bucket Drive
Flood Buckets

Communities affected by Super Storm Sandy need our help. We can help by putting together cleaning buckets. A member of Northridge United Methodist Church in Springfield has generously donated a truck and driver who will take collected buckets to the Midwest Distribution Center where they will be used to fill requests from affected Annual Conferences.  Here's what you can do:

  • Put together cleaning buckets by following the UMCOR instructions HERE.  Please follow the instructions carefully. The approximate cost of putting together a bucket is $55.00 or less.
  • Deliver completed buckets to a drop off location near you. A list of West Ohio drop off locations by district is available HERE (Please check the list carefully, you may live closer to a collection point in another district).
  • All kits should be at the drop off locations by 4:00 pm November 29, 2012.
  • If you have a vehicle in which you can transport completed buckets to load on the semi in Springfield, please contact the District Office - 614-222-0600 or email jwaugh@wocumc.org.

News from United Methodist Community Ministries

UM Community Ministries

 Renewal Through Fire

The Rev. Beth Weisbrod, Director of the Capitol Area Community Ministries shares a story that the Rev. Bob Alexander shared about the small congregation that he is now serving in Mt. Vernon. It is a story of "Renewal by Fire."

The Rev. Bob Alexander told the story of the renewal of South Vernon UMC at the Mission Workshop held last Saturday for small membership churches at Jacksontown UMC. He said in 2000 his church of only 20 members burned to the ground and they had to decide whether to close or change their focus. They decided to rebuild by looking outward- and connecting with the elementary school in their community. So they collected $1000 worth of school supplies and delivered them to the school, with no strings attached. Then they added coats, socks and underwear. After a year or two they added on a community garden. They then partnered with the nearby university to provide an afterschool program. The college students taught the kids how to save their money and how to start a business. Bob finished by saying "money follows mission."

They now have 75 in worship on Sunday and they are seen as a community church- a church that cares about people in the community, no strings attached. This is exactly what Capitol Area Community Ministries seeks - to help churches find an outward community focus and to grow stronger in the process. Do you have a story of renewal through fire? Please share your story, your recipe and we will collect the stories and share them around the district!

H2O for the Rural Church:

Starting a new worship service in rural communities

The Rev. Vicky Kelley from Centerburg UMC in Zanesville, OH  shared a new way to start a  community worship service and children's ministry in rural communities. She said at her church 10 people had a vision to find a new way to offer church to people who don't come to church. They discovered free downloads of music, sermons and children's ministry through lifechurch.tv and H2Ochurch.tv. They were able to fix up and rent a storefront in town and then utilize the free downloads to get the new worship service and community children's ministry off the ground.  If you don't have a band and you wish you could start a new worship service for people who won't step into church, contact Vicky at keepitrealvk@gmail.com or 740-877-5476. Where there is a will there is a way!

Kirkersville UMC -- Making a Difference

Kirkersville
Kirkersville church members at the Licking Joint Fire Dist. Kirkersville Station

Here are two reports from Kirkersville UMC.

The congregation participated in "Make a Difference Day" by delivering homemade vegetable soup and pumpkin pie to West Licking Joint Fire District's Kirkersville Station.  The church also donated a bag of stuffed animals to the fire district.  Firefighters will be able to hand out the items to young children during fire emergencies. Click HERE to read the full story from the Newark Advocate.

The congregation also recently partnered with the Watkins Memorial High School in offering freshmen the opportunity to participate in "Living in the Real World."  Students were confronted with real life situations about raising a family and having enough income to take care of the family's needs.  Representatives from local businesses assisted in the exercise.  This is the second year that the church has offered the real world simulation to freshmen at the high school. Society of St. Andrews
Honor Your Family & Friends
While Feeding the Hungry

While you and your family celebrate the joyous Christmas season, many Americans will experience first-hand the reality of hunger and poverty in our land of abundance. This Christmas, you can give them hope by the simple act of honoring your loved ones with a gift donation to feed the hungry

The Gift

Each $12 gift donation to the Society of St. Andrew provides about 600 servings of fresh, nutritious food to America's hungry families. It's a sincere and loving way to feed the hungry and honor special people in your life. Each person you so honor will receive our exclusive Christmas Gift Donation Card announcing your generous gift in their name.

The Card

Our Alternative Christmas Card was designed exclusively for the Society of St. Andrew by Texas artist Jerry Malzahn. The full-color, 7"x5" card features original art on the front. Inside is an inspirational verse. This one-of-a-kind card announces your generous gift to feed the hungry in the name of your chosen honorees. You will also receive the same card with our thanks and confirmation of the number of people you honored.
