House Passes FY 2014 Appropriations Department of Homeland Security Bill

Today the House of Representatives passed HR 2217, the FY 2014 Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill. Three important amendments were made during floor deliberations that increased funding for the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) and SAFER programs, the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), and the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) program. They are summarized below.

Congressman Runyan (NJ) and Pascrell (NJ) offered an amendment, which passed, to increase AFG and SAFER by a total of $5 million, bringing the total for each program to $340 million. This is a significant victory for the Fire Service and all are to be congratulated.
Through a successful amendment offered by Congressman Reichert, USFA funding was increased $1.838 million to its FY 13 (pre-sequestration) level of $44 million.

The USAR program was increased $7.667 million to its FY 2013 pre-sequestration level of $35.18 million. The amendment was offered by Congressman Grimm (NY) and Connolly (VA).

Thank you for working to accomplish these positive outcomes. The legislative process for DHS appropriations now moves to the Senate. We will keep you informed of developments there.

How to Effectively Respond to a Catastrophe

In the age of social media, a small misstep can lead to reputational loss or a greater loss of money. It is crucial that a company's Chief Operating Officer (COO) stay on top of events, especially in a crisis. By doing so, a company can take charge of what is put out there from an official company standpoint and hopefully gain control of the situation before the crisis grows out of control. Listed below are some important steps that a company can take to effectively manage a response to a catastrophe.
