AFG SUPPORT FOR HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF EFFORTS

As you are aware, FEMA is working closely with its state and local partners insupporting disaster response and recovery operations throughout the areas impacted by Hurricane Sandy. More than 5,000 FEMA employees have been deployed, including many members of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) staff, both regional staff members and headquarters (HQ) staff members in Washington, DC.

However, the AFG Program continues to maintain operations. If you have current awards, your grant functions (payments, amendments, etc.) will be processed as quickly as possible. In addition, we anticipate resuming FY 2012 AFG and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant award announcements within the next 2 weeks.

If you are unable to reach specific AFG regional or HQ staff members during this period, please contact the AFG Help Desk for assistance. The Help Desk can be reached toll free at 1-866-274-0960 or by e-mail at firegrants@fema.dhs.gov

Tell Congress to Reauthorize AFG/SAFER and USFA!

In the next few days the U.S. Senate is expected to vote on whether or not to reauthorize the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant programs as well as the United States Fire Administration (USFA). This morning, Senators Lieberman (I-CT), Collins (R-ME), Carper (D-DE) and Brown (R-MA) filed an amendment to include language reauthorizing AFG/SAFER and USFA in S. 3254, the National Defense Authorization Act.

Contact your senators TODAY and tell them to affirm their support for AFG/SAFER and USFA by voting for the Lieberman-Collins-Carper-Brown amendment!

TAKE ACTION!

The Dangers of Using an Unprotected and Outdated Power Grid System

With an aging power grid providing energy for the U.S., what should be done to protect it from attack? The outcomes from such an attack far outweigh the costs to protect the grid.
