Final Deadline for FY 2011 Fire Prevention and Safety Grant Applications: Friday, May 4, 2012, 5PM EDT

You only have a few days left to submit an application for FY 2011 Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Grant funding.  To read the FP&S Get Ready Guide and start an e-Grant application, visit the FP&S Grants page on the AFG Website at www.fema.gov/firegrants.  The online application must be completed and submitted through the electronic e-Grant application system by Friday, May 4, 2012, at 5 p.m. EDT.

Prepare for FY 2012 AFG! Grant Workshops Have Begun!

Throughout the month of May, the Regional Fire Program Specialists in the 10 FEMA regions will hold workshops on the FY 2012 AFG Program and upcoming application period.  The workshops will help potential applicants understand the purpose of the FY 2012 AFG Program, changes since FY 2011, funding priorities, award evaluation criteria, and a brief description other AFG funding opportunities.  See the AFG Workshop page on the AFG website for the schedule of workshops.  A copy of the presentation to be used at the workshops will be posted on the website in the near future.

USFA and Department of Justice Initiate Study of Best Practices for Emergency Vehicle Visibility
 
USFA, supported by the U.S. Department of Justice National Institute of Justice, and in partnership with the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association's Emergency Responder Safety Institute, has initiated a study of emergency vehicle markings, lighting, and design to recommend best practices for increased visibility to approaching motorists.

Incident Description: Firefighter Longo was driving a squad truck to the fire station to pick up a brush truck in response to a grass fire when he suffered a stroke. Other firefighters in the vehicle were able to get control of the truck and bring it to a safe stop. Longo was treated and transported to the hospital but passed away from his injury several days later.
