IAFC and NVFC Team Up for 2012 Safety and Health Week

Since 2007, the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has sponsored National Firefighter Health Week each August as an opportunity for departments and individual first responders to focus on their health. Now, the NVFC has joined forces with the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) to present the 2012 International Fire/EMS Safety and Health Week, to be held June 17-23.

USFA Releases Civilian Fire Fatalities in Residential
Buildings (2008-2010) Report

"Other unintentionally set, careless" actions and "smoking" are the leading causes.

  

Emmitsburg, MD. - The Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) issued a special report today examining the characteristics of civilian fire fatalities in residential buildings. The report, Civilian Fire Fatalities in Residential Buildings (2008-2010) (PDF, 916 Kb), was developed by USFA's National Fire Data Center and is based on 2008 to 2010 data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS).

Incident Description: Lieutenant Morrison passed away while in quarters from a cause still to be determined. During his shift, Morrison had responded to several emergency response calls.  After fellow firefighters discovered him unconscious in the firehouse and immediately rendered aid, Morrison was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injury.

Incident Description: During interior fire operations at a movie theatre and right after crews were called to exit the structure, the roof of the building collapsed trapping several firefighters and sending them to St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. One firefighter, Lieutenant Jamison Kampmeyer, was reported to have passed away from injuries sustained. The other firefighters injured were treated and released from the hospital on Sunday.

The incident and cause of the fire remains under investigation by local and state authorities.

Incident Description: Captain Jones responded with fire and police to a single-vehicle accident that involved a damaged gas main. While working to clear the scene of the accident, a second motor vehicle reportedly accelerated and veered off of the road striking two firefighters and a police officer. Captain Jones was killed upon impact. The police officer and second firefighter were both transported by air to the hospital and are reported to be in critical but stable condition. The driver of the second vehicle has been charged with 2nd degree murder and two counts of criminal intent to commit 2nd degree murder given that, according to witnesses, this person allegedly did not try to stop.
