SAFER Grants Application Period NOW OPEN

Applications may be submitted through February 24, 2012, 5 p.m. Eastern Time  
For information on how to apply, see the FY 2011 SAFER Grant Program Guidance and Application Kit. Applicants may choose from a variety of resources available on the SAFER Grants Web page to help them develop an application, including SAFER Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), a SAFER Quick Guide, a Recruitment and Retention of Volunteers video, applicant self-evaluations, and more. SAFER Help Desk specialists can answer questions by telephone (toll-free at 1-866-274-0960) or by e-mail (firegrants@dhs.gov.) The Help Desk hours of operation during the application period are Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

The Congressional Fire Services Institute is Accepting Nominations for its 2012 Awards Program

The Congressional Fire Services Institute is accepting nominations for its 2012 national awards program.  These awards honor both individuals and organizations for excellence in leadership.    With the generous support of corporations and organizations committed to public safety, CFSI is able to recognize leaders who have made major contributions to our nation's fire and emergency services.  CFSI is seeking both individuals and organizations deserving of recognition for outstanding leadership in the advancement of firefighter health and safety and the delivery of emergency medical services by fire departments.  For additional information on how to nominate worthy candidates for any of our three awards, please visit our website at www.cfsi.org and click the tab for Leadership Awards.  The awards presentations will take place on April 26 at the 24th Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner in Washington, DC attended by 2,000 fire service leaders.

White House Releases Fiscal 2013 Budget Proposal

On Monday, February 13th, the White House released President Obama's Fiscal Year 2013 (FY13) Budget Proposal. The budget proposal details the Administration's requested funding levels for programs and offices in the federal government for Fiscal Year 2013.  The approximately $3.8 trillion budget includes $39.5 billion for homeland security spending, a decrease of 0.5% below the enacted Fiscal Year 2012 level.

Time of Incident: 1830hrs
Date of Death: 02/02/2012

Fire Department: Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department

Address: 7455 New RD, Edinboro, PA 16412-3611

Fire Department Chief: Pending

Incident Description: While returning to the fire department, Fire Chief Flint passed away from injuries he suffered in a motor vehicle crash when another vehicle coming from the opposite direction crossed over the center line. Assistant Fire Chief Sharon Petri, a passenger who was riding with Flint at the time of the accident, was injured and remains hospitalized. Investigation into the incident continues by local and state authorities.

Incident Location: 6-N East of Fry Road

Incident Description: Firefighter Whitacre passed away from injuries sustained when the apparatus he was riding in crashed. Freezing temperatures and hazardous road conditions caused by fire tanker operations were possible contributing factors to the accident. Investigation into the incident by local and state authorities continues.
Incident Location: U.S. 50 & Timber Ridge Rd, Bloomery, Hampshire, West Virginia 26711
