Tempering all the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) Hype |
If you heard the recent National Public Radio (NPR) segments on the Social Security Disability Insurance program you might have the impression that this program's growth is way out of control. Steve Morgan from The Arc Baltimore sets the record straight in this Baltimore Sun letter to the editor.
The Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) also responds to the NPR segments calling them a "misleading and inaccurate picture" of Social Security programs that are a "vital lifeline" for Americans with severe disabilities. Read the CCD's response: "Unfit for NPR..." |

Thank You for Supporting the Bowling Bash! |
The Arc's 14th Annual Bowling Bash was a huge success! Netting over $26,000, the event was sponsored by Alco Pharmacy, Hays Companies, and many additional supporters. The Bowling Bash is the main fundraiser for The Sarah Petit Fund, which provides recreational grants to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A big thanks to our supporters, bowlers, and volunteers! View our photo album from the Bash! |

This Year's Bash Extends to Ohio |
| Bowlers at the Ohio Bash |
This year the Bash at College Park AMF Lanes was not the only one taking place. Kate Parker, long-time friend of The Arc, decided to honor the memory of Sarah Petit, for whom the fund is named, in a special way. Kate celebrated her 30th Birthday with a Bowling Bash in Ohio and donated proceeds to The Arc. The highlight of the Ohio Bash, said Kate, was having an occasion to talk about Sarah Petit with the 45 people who came to the Ohio event. "I felt like it gave her memory new life in a new place," said Kate. Thank you, Kate, for all your work to help more people here in Prince George's County go places, make friends, and have fun! |
April is Autism Awareness Month and here at The Arc, we are eager to help share information and resources for individuals with autism and their families. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released a recent study indicating that one in 50 children in America now has a diagnosis of Autism. This number represents an increase from the previous number of one child in 88. It is important to note that the study does not state that more children are born with Autism, but that more children are being accurately diagnosed. Read more about this CDC report.
Information like this emphasizes the need for resources. The Arc's Autism Waiver Program offers monthly workshops or "ArcShops" with speakers on topics of interests to families. Some of the ArcShops held this past year included Safety Night, Building Blocks for IEP Success, and Positive Behavior Supports. Upcoming ArcShops include discussions on Occupational Therapy, Toileting, and a Family Fun Day. Contact Lina Zubi at lzubi@thearcofpgc.org for more information. |
