COOPER IN THE NEWS

At William Mason Cooper Elementary Magnet School

for Technology, our students work hard to reach their

personal and academic goals.

In the Tech Lab, students

are taught skills that they can use to solve problems like engineers.

The Children's Engineering program encourages them to use their creativity along with science, math, social studies and language arts skills to complete design challenges. After identifying a problem, students brain-

storm possible solutions. Next, students plan how to

use the available materials to create their design.

Once their design is built, it is tested. Our students use

higher order thinking skills to evaluate how well their

design works. Improvements are made and then

retested. This process concludes with written and oral

reports. They develop their communication skills by participating in discussions and sharing what they discovered when working through a challenge.

GOLD STAR

Star Achievers Academy YMCA sponsors after school academic and enrichment clubs during each school semester. After school clubs help students explore their talents, learn new ones, and expand their personal experiences. With the help of creative educational supervision and qualified staff, Star Achievers Academy YMCA sponsors the clubs to stimulate and broaden our students' experiences so they become more successful in their academic and social development. This month we are proud to feature our Double Dutch Club.

The goal  of the Double Dutch Club is to teach children the sport of Double Dutch. Children are taught that Double Dutch is not only a fun sport and a way to mantain healthy living; it is also a fun exercise that can be educational. We strive to help students develop the Double Dutch technique by turning two ropes one clockwise and the other counterclockwise while a third participant jumped in the middle.

The students range from 1st -5th graders both girls and boys. Most of the children started out in the club not being able to jump with both ropes. At the end of the year children are jumping with both ropes and learning to do tricks in the ropes. Students also learn different rhymes with Standards of Learning (SOL) techniques and times table patterns. Every year the club has been invited to take part in the PTA SOL Fitness night at Cooper Elementary to showcase their new skills.

The club sponsor is Mrs. Tonya Hutchinson, Pre-K Teacher Cooper Elementary.
