MEET AMENNA MATTHEWS,
SUNDAY MORNING KEYNOTE
Ameena Matthews is one of the most visible members of the Chicago gang violence cessation group Cure Violence (formerly CeaseFire) and one of the stars of Steve James' documentary about the group, "The Interrupters."

What does Ameena do as an interrupter?  She is constantly "on call", aggressively mediating conflicts, arbitrating confrontation and even physically stepping into the middle of them in order to prevent their escalation to physical violence.

But Ameena wasn't always the one breaking up the fights and trying to keep the peace. Gang life was a big part of life as a child. Her father, Jeff Fort, just happens to be one of Chicago's best-known gang leaders. And as Matthews will tell you, she didn't think she'd live to see 25, because most of her young adult life was wrapped up in life on the streets.

We're lucky to have Ameena join us at this year's conference. Cure Violence.has been extremely successful in reducing violent altercations in some of Chicago's most dangerous neighborhoods, with Matthews serving as an influential face of the organization nationally and internationally.

Make sure you find time to hear her presentation, and then talk with her about the violence on Chicago's streets and what we can do to support her work to prevent it.

 Rhapsody Snyder
FRIDAY EVENING RECEPTION

5:00 PM to 6:00 PM

We're fortunate that most of our keynotes will be with us two or three days, and many will be joining us on Friday to enjoy gourmet appetizers, wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages before Dr. Sandra Steingraber gives her keynote address in Congress Lounge.

Socialize with friends and colleagues, while listening to Rhapsody Snyder at the piano, whose  repertoire includes classical, jazz and rock. This is a separately ticked event, but one that will be most memorable!

And don't forget to register before October 3, when Early Bird registration ends.  You can access schedules for each day, workshop descriptions and presenter biographies from the home page of our website: bioneerschicago.org
