Canola Oil: Good or Bad?Yoga

There are many oils recommended for healthy use, including ghee, olive oil, sesame oil, coconut oil.Often listed is canola oil.

But is canola oil a healthy oil?

Canola oil is derived from the rapeseed plant, which is an ancient oilseed plant used as fuel for fires and lamps as long ago as 4000 years. As with many fats and oils, rapeseed oil has been and is used as insecticide, in soap, synthetic rubber, ink, varnish, as an industrial lubricant and as a biofuel.

Rapeseed  oil has been found to be more efficient than other oils because it clings to steam-washed metal surfaces. Its use was important in steam engines, most recently in WWII when it was used in merchant and naval steam ships.

If rapeseed oil sticks to metal surfaces, even when being steamed, then one must ask:

Is rapeseed/canola oil also clinging to the insides of my intestines and stomach, inhibiting nutrient absorption?

Canola oil was developed at the University of Manitoba in the early 1970s by seed-splitting and reducing erucic acid, which made rapeseed oil bitter and unplatable. The new oil, designated LEAR for low erucic acid rapeseed, was not a feasible name. Because of the negative connotation of rape, the rapeseed oil was renamed after the country in which it is found:  Canada, hence canola oil.

Although promoted as safe for human consumption, canola oil has been developed as a biotech plant (better known as a genetically modified organism or GMO).In 2011, 26% of Canada's canola oil was produced as GMO.North Dakota grows most of the United States canola crop and 93% of that crop is GMO.

At least six studies have been conducted on canola oil over the last 30 years.  According to Sally Fallon and Mary G. Enig, PhD, of the Weston A. Price foundation, they revealed that

"canola oil is definitely not healthy for the cardiovascular system.Like rapeseed oil, its predecessor, canola oil is associated with fibrotic lesions of the heart. It also causes vitamin E deficiency, undesirable changes in the blood platelets and shortened life-span in stroke-prone rats when it was the only oil in the animals' diet. Furthermore, it seems to retard growth, which is why the FDA does not allow the use of canola oil in infant formula. When saturated fats are added to the diet, the undesirable effects of canola oil are mitigated. Most interesting of all is the fact that many studies show that the problems with canola oil are not related to the content of erucic acid, but more with the high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and low levels of saturated fats."

The other issue with canola oil is it is highly refined.High temperature mechanical processing is required removing the oil from the seed. Then a solvent, usually hexane, is added to further process the seed, leaving traces of the hexane in the canola oil.

The product is further refined using water precipitation and organic acid, and bleaching with clay.Because canola oil is high in omega-3 fatty acids that can quickly smell rancid, the oil is deodorized using more high temperatures of 300oF with steam distillation. The high temperature removes a lot of the omega-3 fatty acids and turns them into trans-fatty acids.

What oil can withstand temperatures of 300 degrees and still have healthy nutrients?

After the oil is extracted from the seed, the remaining husks are turned into animal feed, thus increasing the GMO content of food being consumed by animals that are in turn used to feed us.

In order for canola oil to be used in processed, packaged foods, it must be hydrogenated to help stabilize the shelf life of the product.Any hydrogenated oil is horrible for the human body, yet canola oil is widely used because it is an inexpensive oil and touted as being healthy.

Because canola oil is cheap and a huge cash crop for Canada and for the United States, it continues to be promoted. Many restaurants and most fast food outlets use canola oil in their foods. It is important for every person to do their own research and learn all the facts. There are many better alternative oils available than to risk using canola oil with its dubious characteristics and possible detrimental side effects.
