Reflection:  False Dichotomies

Dear friends,
As we seem now to be deep in a political season based on creating division and false dichotomies of us versus them, I invite you to pause for a moment to consider how we, as a congregation, have bridged what seemed like divisions.

We are literally reaching around the world to help keep people from slavery.  We are reaching our brothers and sisters in Flint to ensure that children have clean water and health care.  We are reaching out to brave visionaries who speak the truth about human unity.  In a season of false dichotomies, we are a congregation living a message of oneness.

There is another area where we must now reach across and build bridges: and that is our youngest members.  We speak so often of delight in welcoming families with young children, and now I invite you to walk this talk by offering just one hour to our youngest members.  In the upcoming weeks, Sarah and I will be asking every member (who has been in the congregation for at least 6 months per our Safe Congregation Policy) to spend 1 hour with our delightful youngest members.

We live in a world where we are taught about division, divisiveness and lack of reaching across boundaries.  We are a UU congregation, countercultural, and bridge builders!

Thank you for your amazing generosity in helping model for the world in both talk and walk how to explore the "unity" in Unitarian.

In blessing -
Rabbi Chava

10:30 a.m.  Programming & Education for Children and Youth

This Month for Children...While the adults in the congregation explore our Second UU Principle - Justice, Equity, and Compassion in Human Relations, we will be exploring the theme through story in our classrooms. This month will include Lily's Purple Plastic Purse, Old Turtle, and The Grateful Bull - from "Buddha at Bedtime."  The last Sunday of the month will be Super Activity Sunday - we will make this a regular monthly occurrence, providing children with the learning-center opportunity that was available (and very popular!) earlier this fall.

This Month for Youth...This month our youth will continue to explore justice.  They will continue to learn about homelessness through activities and discussion.

Friday Night Out
We are in need of one volunteer to help our regular team staff the Friday Night Out on March 11th from 5:15pm-9pm.  This is an important program that serves many families - parents are counting on us!
PLEASE contact Sarah ASAP if you are able to assist!

ALSO... we frequently have a wait-list for Friday Night Out and could make this program available to more families if we REGULARLY had an additional person available... please consider this as well.

Pasty Party!  Sunday, February 28, 2:00-6:00/7:00 p.m.
Have you ever wanted to make this favorite UP standard? Now you can, along with other UU friends and colleagues - Pasty Party at the home of Lauren Keinath.  Learn how 3 basics work together to make a satisfying pasty - comfort food to thousands.  Have fun in the Pasty Line; bake, eat, enjoy the fruits of your work; plus take some home for your freezer for easy-peasy convenient meals later.

Lauren has been making pasties for 50 years, learning at a young age from good UP cooks.  She'll share her version, and show you how to add your own unique stamp to this malleable classic.

We have room for 7 more participants; extra eaters (such as kids) may also come, but we'll need to know, so we know how many to plan for dinner.  Costs and pasties-to-freeze are divvied up at the end of the Party.  Contact Lauren or call 231-342-0617 to reserve a spot.

Food for Life Nutrition Education & Cooking Workshops - designed by Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM.org):  offered by Sherry Davis, Certified FFL Instructor.  Please see link to website here.
