Reflection:  Deep Ecumenism

"The only way to get it together is ... TOGETHER!"
- Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi

From my teachers:  Following on Meister Eckhart, Reverend Mathew Fox wrote regarding the many wells into that One River, "We would make a grave mistake if we confused [any one well] with the flowing waters of the underground river.  Many wells, one river.  That is Deep Ecumenism."

Deep Ecumenism teaches us that every religious tradition is a path to the One.  In Rev. Fox's metaphor, each religious tradition is a wellspring tapping into the same underground river; in Reb Zalman's metaphor, each religious tradition is an organ in the body of collective humanity:  our differences are meaningful, and our commonality is significant.

Deep Ecumenism teaches us that we can best serve the needs of all humanity when we not only respect other religious paths, but collaborate with them in our shared work of healing creation.  No one tradition contains all the answers, but every tradition can be (in the Buddha's words) "a finger pointing at the moon."

Join us this Sunday as Sarah Montgomery-Richards shares her insights and excitement from the Parliament of World Religions, and I will share the context of Deep Ecumenism and what it means for this UU.  Prior to this 10:30 service, I will host our first 9:00 learning session:  "A Brief History of Unitarianism".  We will meet in the social hall.

In blessing-
Rabbi Chava

Sunday Service
November 8
9:00am - "Introduction to  UU History, Part I" - Rabbi Chava
10:30am - "Reflections on the Parliament of World Religions" - Rabbi Chava and Sarah Montgomery-Richards
In 1893 religious leaders from all over the world gathered in Chicago to create a dialogue that could end war, hatred and much unnecessary human suffering.  It was decided that the Parliament would take place every 100 years.  100 years later, humanity still faces grave concerns, so the Parliament is now convened every other year.  Sarah Montgomery-Richards traveled to Salt Lake City to attend the Parliament, together with 10,000 people representing over 500 religions.  She will bring highlights and teachings to our community.

Please Note:  In November, we host our first 9:00am learning opportunities for adults:  "A Brief History of Unitarian Universalism" - November 8, 15 and 29 (meeting in the social hall).  Contemplative Meditation will return in December.

Local Community Needs

$3016 was distributed to those in need by your Local Community Needs Committee.  We gave $1266 to the Commission on Aging -- $500 for dental needs and $766 for emergency heating.  $500 was given to the Grace Episcopal Food Pantry and $1000 to the heating assistance fund through Northwest Michigan Community Action.  Additionally, UU will be a Table Sponsor at the Empty Bowls Fundraiser for Food Rescue this Sunday on November 8th with our contribution of $250.  Food Rescue is a Goodwill program that provides fresh food to local food pantries.

Karl Kristen joined our committee and we are happy to have his input.  In the past, UU members have filled out Donation Request Forms.  Aside from Safe Harbor requests, this has not happened in several months and our committee is unsure why.  Due to this change, we have made an effort to better educate ourselves about local charities.  Marsha Johnson from the Commission on Aging attended our meeting to inform us about the work of her agency.  Last quarter we heard from a Goodwill representative about the Workers on Wheels Program.

If you have donation requests or feedback for us, please contact any member:  Liz Bruning, Chair; Shari Cope, Karl Kristen, Joan Sheard, and Chris Walter.  Our mission is to give to charities that support those in need in our five county area.  We will meet again in January.

Thank you to all who support this important UU mission!
Liz Bruning, Chair

Many heartfelt thanks to each and every individual who helped make our first Pagan Fair a wonderful success!

We are overwhelmed by the response we received and by the number of people who joined us for the day!  And, we are already talking about future events - stay tuned to the UUCGT for the latest and greatest from our CUUPS chapter!  Bright blessings to each of you -

this wouldn't have been possible without you!

FYI

Program Council:  Saturday, November 14, 9:00-11:00am, classroom.  Rabbi Chava will convene the next meeting of the Program Council.  If you are the chair of a committee, please plan to come to this important conversation.  If you are not able to attend, please consider having a member of your committee represent you.  Coffee and fruit will be available.  Please RSVP to office@uucgt.org or call (231) 947-3117.

Donated Dinners:  John and Pinkie Hoffmann are coordinating a Donated Dinners mini-fundraiser.  This is a fun event and is a simple process:  Congregants may volunteer to host a dinner, others purchase the dinners, show up at the scheduled date and time, and enjoy amazing food and company!

More hosts are needed!  If interested, contact John & Pinkie, 275-3602, or talk to them at Church.   Let them know what type of dinner you will serve (Thai, Vegetarian, French, etc.), the date (as specific as possible), price per person (prices usually average about $25-$35), and number of guests you can accommodate.  Donated Dinners will be available for purchase at our UUCGT Thanksgiving Dinner at Twin Lakes Gilbert Lodge on November 22.

November is Homelessness Awareness Month:  Sorellini's, McGee's & Harrington's will donate a portion of dinner proceeds to Northern Michigan Supportive Housing (NMSH).  Click here for details and for additional community events.

Membership Committee meets:  Wednesday, November 18, 4:00pm, classroom.  Chris Walter.

ALL MUSIC SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6th is fast approaching!  So, it is time to consider being a part of a wonderful morning.  We are asking that musicians who would like to take part prepare a 3-5 minute piece for the program.  The deadline to register is November 22nd, as time is needed for planning the service.  Anyone interested should contact Judy Weaver or call 947-0947.

Two Friends, Two Cellos - Crispin Campbell & Eugene Friesen:  Saturday, December 5, 8:00pm @ UUCGT.  The combination of Friesen's haunting, nature-inspired compositions and Campbell's blues and tango influenced playing create what has been called a "...thundering evening of cello music."
