The Weekly Epistle

Progress through the calendar waits for no one. So, one week later the event that is pressing in on us is the beginning of Lent. I hope you can take some time to visit Lent 2016 on our website for a complete description of the program. Last year we introduced ourselves to the Rule of St Benedict. Because our 2015 Lent program was so well received we will continue to explore Benedict through his concept of a rule of life.

Put simply, a rule of life is like a garden trellis - a structure that ensures optimal growing conditions. This is a wonderful metaphor for our spiritual lives. We need structure that supports us to grow into the person that God is dreaming us into becoming. Our spiritual trellis is our rule of life - a structure and pattern that gives us freedom to grow as we are meant to.

We will use the program from St John the Evangelist (SSJE), a community of Benedictine monks in the Episcopal Church located not far from us in Cambridge, Mass. This is an online program entitled Growing a rule of life, and it's designed for individuals, and groups.

To begin to prepare for Growing a rule of life at St Martin's please register yourself by signing up to www.SSJE.org/growrule . This will give you access to the short online videos that form the daily element of the program and the download version of the workbook. The online nature of this program means that if you can't or choose not to attend our Tuesday Evening program you can still participate in Growing a rule of life. I realize that evenings are not always easy for those with young children. If you are in this position then following the program online and attending the adult formation hour on Sunday morning offers another way to participate in our Lent Program. However, I hope many of you will want to participate through the Tuesday evening program, which is fully described at Lent 2016 on the website. This year we are asking for a voluntary contribution of $35 per person to cover the costs of a simple meal and program materials.

The Sunday adult formation hour following the main service will complement the Tuesday evening program by exploring the key elements of spiritual practice to help to build the content for our spiritual rule of life. We will follow Michelle Hayne's wonderful little book, In Your Holy Spirit: Traditional Spiritual Practices for Today's Christian Life. Click on the link in Lent 2016for purchase details. There you will find other reading suggestions for exploring a Benedictine Lent. Don't forget to register yourself by signing up to
www.SSJE.org/growrule.

This coming Tuesday the men of Gander will cater our traditional Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. Following this link you can refresh your knowledge of traditions behind this event. Wednesday arrives with a bang as Ash Wednesday launches us into the observances of a Holy Lent. The imposition of ashes will take place at all services: 7am, 12 noon, and 7pm.

It remains only for me to wish you all a spiritually fruitful Lent.

Lenten Discipline to benefit St. Mary's Home for Children

St. Mary's Home was founded in 1877 in the Rectory of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in East Providence to house orphans and other needy children. In 1928, the home was moved to its present site in North Providence. It is still an Episcopal entity supported by the Episcopal Charities Fund. Bishop Knisely is the Chairman of the Board and Fr. Mark sits on the Governing Council. With preservation of the family as the goal, St. Mary's has initiated innovative and highly successful programs that combine residential treatment with outpatient counseling and in-home services for the care of abused and neglected children. The facility also provides on-campus classroom education.

As part of your Lenten discipline, will you consider making a contribution to St. Mary's of items used routinely for celebration, therapy, rewards and incentives? The staff offers these suggestions: colored pencils, brushes, small bottles of tempera paint, washable markers, construction paper, craft sets, playing cards, stickers, posters (animal, cartoon characters, cars), lanyards, stress balls, silly putty, Wii games (old or new), sour candy, scented lotions, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, hair brushes, hair accessories, make -up, deodorant, cosmetics, beads, tickets to the zoo or a museum and all local movie theatres, gift certificates in the $5-$25 range to the Providence Mall, Warwick Mall, Target, McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Newport Creamery, Friendly's, Chelo's, Chili's, Applebees, Papa Gino's, Pizza Hut and general use cards. There will be a basket at the back of the church labeled St. Mary's.

We will be collecting items beginning Ash Wednesday through Easter. Questions? Please speak with Jennifer Kiddie or call the office.

Can you...?

St. Paul's Church, Wickford-Parish Hall

For almost two years now, a small group of clergy and laity have provided spirituality, Bible study, Holy Eucharist, and character-development courses to inmates at the Women's Facility and at Men's Minimum.  Unfortunately, this year three of our team members relocated. They are now actively recruiting both laity and clergy who would be interested in this very special call and ministry. Most of the ministry involves living out our Baptismal promises by just being present and building a relationship of trust in a group setting. They work on a rotation basis as a team so that with just a few more dedicated members, one might only have to commit to being present once per month. They go in as a team of two or more to very secure settings for a brief 1 to 1.5 hours and then team debriefings and retreats are held.
