The Weekly Epistle

Last week I wrote about the Annual (Parochial) Meeting then scheduled for last Sunday. The weather and the City of Providence intervened and so the meeting is now rescheduled for this coming Sunday. I hope to see you then.

If you are like me, the prospect of the Annual Meeting may not fill you with excited expectation. However, this year we have designed an agenda that will focus on:
  • Celebrating our 2015 achievements.
  • Honoring one of our most faithful members.
  • Thanking Vestry members and Senior Warden stepping down from service and electing new people to office.
  • Ratifying the 2016 budget.
  • Presenting the parish profile and forward direction from our RenewalWorks spiritual inventory.
  • Communicating the results of the survey on our recent Sunday morning experiment.
Time pressure means I need to say something about this last point. Following the results of the recent survey on the Sunday morning experiment the Vestry, after careful analysis of the results has agreed new service times for Sunday mornings. Beginning on February 7th, we will move to an 8am spoken Eucharist, a main service of Eucharist with choir and sermon at 9.30am, followed by Christian formation and coffee hour at 10.45am. This will now be our permanent Sunday service time line-up until we move to summer program hours at the beginning of July.

As we gear ourselves for the immanent arrival of Lent we look forward to the annual Pancake Supper on Tuesday 9th February. This year Gander, our spirituality group for men, will be catering this event. The proceeds of the $10 per person and $30 per family will go towards supporting our expanding Christian formation program.

Next week I will talk more about Lent, which is rapidly bearing down upon us. If you want to take a sneak look at the 2016 Lent program go to Lent 2016 (stmartinsprov.org/lent-2016/)

I look forward to seeing you this Sunday for the State of the Parish sermon and Annual Meeting with brunch.

This Sunday...January 31st

St. Martin's Annual Meeting in the Great Hall immediately following the 9:15am service.
The Annual Meeting is an opportunity for the parish to have brunch together, to review the past year including programming and finances, to elect vestry officers and members, and to learn about what we have to look forward to in the next year.  The RenewalWorks report will be presented as well as the results of our recent surveys for the worship space and Sunday schedule.  Child care will be provided.

Wanted:  Coffee Hour Hosts
It is a St. Martin's tradition to offer coffee and snacks after our 10am Sunday service. We ask parishioners to volunteer to host these weekly Coffee Hours.  Hosts provide two gallons of juice, a half-gallon of whole milk, a half-gallon of half-and-half, and snacks to share.  David Ely will be available to help you with set-up and clean-up. We have quite a few openings for the spring.  Please consider signing up, today!  The sign-up sheet is on the flip chart in the Great Hall. Attending Coffee Hour is a great way to greet visitors, catch up with old friends, and get to know new friends.

Can you...?

help with this very special ministry at the state prison,
the Adult Correctional Institute (ACI) in Cranston?

Next Meeting:
Monday, February 8, 2016
St. Paul's Church, Wickford-Parish Hall

For almost two years now, a small group of clergy and laity have provided spirituality, Bible study, Holy Eucharist, and character-development courses to inmates at the Women's Facility and at Men's Minimum.  Unfortunately, this year three of our team members relocated. They are now actively recruiting both laity and clergy who would be interested in this very special call and ministry. Most of the ministry involves living out our Baptismal promises by just being present and building a relationship of trust in a group setting. They work on a rotation basis as a team so that with just a few more dedicated members, one might only have to commit to being present once per month. They go in as a team of two or more to very secure settings for a brief 1 to 1.5 hours and then team debriefings and retreats are held.
