St. Martin's Newsletter
 Message from S. Stephen's...

Dear Friends,

Tomorrow, Saturday (12/12) we will offer our annual Advent Quiet Day, with addresses by the Rt. Rev. Daniel Martins, Bishop of the Diocese of Springfield, Illinois.

**If you plan to attend and haven't already let me know, please do so as soon as possible, either via reply email or by calling the parish office at 421-6702, ext. 1.

Quiet Day begins at 9 am with Morning Prayer and Low Mass and concludes with tea and conversation beginning at 2 pm.

Breakfast and luncheon will be served in the Great Hall.

It's a lovely and meaningful way to prepare for Christmas, and a welcome chance to step away from the noise and business of the season.

Thanks,
Cory

Last Sunday saw our second Christian Formation Hour from 10.30-11.30am and the first in the Episcopal 101 program exploring the essentials of Christian belief and practice. Each week I will post the content of the session at stmartinsprov.org/adult-formation/  This last week we explored the question: Who or What is God? This week we ask the question: Who is Jesus? Thank you to everyone who is giving this new experiment in how we do Sunday morning, a willing go!

This weekend is the Third Sunday in Advent and has been designated the Sunday within something called the National Gun Violence Prevention Sabbath Weekend. I am somewhat daunted by the task of having to address this event in my sermon because although like everyone else I have my personal opinions about our current national emergency of gun violent deaths, I am not yet an American Citizen, and therefore hesitate to appear to be too opinionated about the American cultural context.

The number of gun related deaths in the US is shocking. It appears staggering to other Western nations who don't appear to have the same problem. Having lived in three cultural contexts in my life, it seems to me that Americans do not have a monopoly on violent tendencies.  Also, in both New Zealand and the UK the possession of hunting rifles is not uncommon, but very few indeed possess handguns, and such possession is governed by a strict registration process. The difference with America lies in the unrestricted availability not only of handguns but assault weapons designed for combat situations.

The origin and subsequent interpretation of the Second Amendment reveals a complex line of development. Yet, even Justice Scalia, with whose legal decisions I am generally not in agreement, has declared that the right to bear arms is not an unencumbered right exempt from regulation.  A key factor is the lack of will in Congress to legislate regulations appropriate in the context of a 21st-century nation in the grip of an escalation of fearfulness. We know why Congress is reluctant to act. It's the same reason that few politicians are unwilling to confront the rising tide of demagoguery flooding the airwaves at present. The reason is money equals power!

The teaching of Christianity is very clear on the issues of guns. Simply put, it sees no need for them. Even the sharp and judgmental tongue of John the Baptist, in some ways the very epitome of an evangelical style of religion, which in this country continues to remain deafeningly silent on this issue of gun violence, when asked by the crowds what should we do?, told them:
  • To share what you have with others
  • Not to monopolize control over more than you need
  • To espouse nonviolence towards others
  • To refrain from financial extortion, threatening behavior, making false accusations against others
  •  To be satisfied with what you have
St Augustine said: Hope has two daughters. Their names are anger and courage; anger at the way things are, and courage to see that they do not remain the way they are.

Let this be our cry of hope in this Advent time. See you in Church, this Sunday!

National Gun Violence Prevention Sabbath Weekend
December 10-14, 2015

Join places of worship across the nation, the Washington National Cathedral, the Newtown Foundation and Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence (a coalition of more than 50 national denominations and faith-based organizations) to remember those who have lost their lives to gunfire, pray for those whose lives have been forever changed because of the loss of a loved one, and to educate one another on proven strategies to reduce gun violence.

Between December 10-14, hundreds of places of worship and other groups across the country will participate in the National Vigil for Gun Violence Victims and the National Gun Violence Prevention Sabbath Weekend. Please plan to participate through your house of worship.
 Advent Vestments

I hope you have noticed our new Advent Vestments. Working within the color palate of violet and green, the more contemporary design of the new set harmonizes with the
exisiting High Altar Frontal.

These vestments were made by Bob Amarantes, and are a gift from Peggy Chisholm in memory of her brother, a former parishioner, Fred Craddock.

A Message from the Director of Christian Formation

Dear Friends,

This Sunday we will have two offerings during the 10:30-11:30 Formation Hour after the 9:15 service: Fr. Mark will lead Episcopal 101 in the Great Hall, and I will lead an intergenerational class in KidZone. Bring your children and teens upstairs to learn a creative way to pray using Sybil MacBeth's popular method of Praying in Color. No artistic ability required, just a willingness to explore Advent themes using markers, paper, and a desire to be creatively present to God. All ages are welcome--don't let the kids have all the fun!

We are still looking for a few (actually a lot of) good angels, a cow and three kings to fill out our Christmas Pageant cast. Please contact me or Lian-Marie Holmes if you are interested. We will have last-minute shepherd and angel costumes for visiting cousins, grandchildren and neighbors, but it would be helpful if you can notify us ahead of time that they might be coming. Thanks!

On Monday December 21 at 5:30 we will have a special service for those who have a difficult time, emotionally or spiritually, during the holidays. Join us for a "Blue Christmas" Service of Darkness and Light, a meditative and prayerful liturgy of healing. All are welcome.

Peace and Advent Blessings to all,
Linda

Another thank you to all the parishioners who gave so much of their time, energy, talent, and treasure make the Advent Tea such  lovely event. I am so grateful for all the support given to the Hospitality Committee.

 AMOS HOUSE HOLIDAY DRIVE!

As many of you know, Lisa and I have long supported the wonderful work of Amos House, at the Mother and Child Reunification House and the Fatherhood House. We're once again raising funds for the Holiday Drive. Last year our donations provided the following:

New toys and clothing for Christmas for over 250 children, as well as adults enrolled in all  programs
           Over 500 Christmas Eve meals
Gift bags for each of the men and women living in the Transitional Housing program

St. Martin's has a long history with Amos House, and we'd appreciate anything you might be able to contribute to the Holiday Drive. Checks should be made out to Amos House with "Holiday Drive" in the memo line. Lisa and I will be at the 9:15 service this Sunday, and will be happy to get the checks to Amos House in time for the deadline, early next week.

Many thanks,
Susan Loney & Lisa Ballou
