The Weekly Epistle

This coming Wednesday at 7pm, Bishop Nicholas will come to St Martin's to ordain Linda Mackie Griggs to the transitional diaconate. Linda and her husband Malcolm joined St Martin's in September of 2014 upon Linda's appointment as Director of Christian Formation. Shortly before her arrival, Linda had completed her seminary training at Yale Divinity School as a candidate in the Diocese of North Carolina. During this last year her candidature has been transferred to the Diocese of Rhode Island, paving the way for this big moment in our parish life. Linda will continue in her role as Christian Formation director. In addition to her ordination as a transitional deacon, a required step before being ordained a priest next summer means that St Martin's returns to a parish with a clergy team. Although Linda will continue to be part time, her ordination will add new capacity in our parish.

This last Sunday we welcomed Jim Kelliher and his husband Paul Mayben, along with Jim's children Kayla, Christopher and Stephanie. Jim has come to St Martin's to complete the final internship in his training to become a vocational deacon. As a vocational deacon Jim has a calling to the life-long diaconate. Alongside bishops, deacons are the oldest order of ministry in the apostolic tradition. We can trace their origins to the events recorded by Luke in Acts 6. Today the vocational diaconate forms the backbone of supporting the ministry of all the baptized in and to the wider world. Jim's time of learning and growing with us will likewise, contribute to the deepening of our parish life.

Other news:

1.      We have 135 responses and rising on the RenewalWorks on-line survey. This is a really fantastic response and so thank you to everyone who has submitted. The survey closes October 5th, so a little time is left if you have not yet got to it - click here . After the survey closes the national RenewalWorks team will collate our results against a variety of national benchmarks. This information will then be sent to our parish leadership team, who will set to work reviewing the survey results before reporting back in December and January.

2.      From October 5th until October 19th (15 days) you will have an opportunity to tell us of your experience of the nave alter and furniture experiment. This is a short and simple questionnaire so if you managed RenewalWorks, this will be a piece of cake. The survey will verify the extent of support for making permanent the experimental arrangement. If the groundswell supports the change we will then commission a new altar and altar-rail design.

3.      In the week of October 5th you will receive an Annual Renewal Letter in the post.  The letter is really my personal thank you for your continued support of St Martin's. Annual Renewal is that period each fall when we intentionally undertake a spiritual inventory of our own attitudes and commitment to financial gratitude. Instead of being a separate focus, this year the Annual Renewal process will flow out of our RenewalWorks experience of spiritual renewal.

Let's look forward to greeting one another in church this coming Sunday.
