A Message from the Director of Christian Formation

"This is Jonah and the whale.  He was waiting. Waiting for God.  Sometimes you need to wait for God, Ms. Emily."

This quote is from a child who responded, using Legos, to the story of Jonah and the Whale. Author Emily Given describes this episode in an article introducing her curriculum, Building Faith Brick By Brick. It is stories like this from colleagues that have led me to choose to integrate Legos into our KidZone program this year. It will invite our children to immerse themselves in scripture in a way that comes naturally to them; through imagination and kinesthetic creativity; in other words, through play.

Our overall curriculum will focus on Scripture and Tradition, two legs of the "three-legged stool" of Scripture, Tradition and Reason that is the foundation of Anglicanism. (Fear not: we won't neglect Reason: We will use it regularly as we explore the other two 'legs'.) Our Lego lessons will be interspersed with units on Prayer, Sacraments and the saints of the church, including our own St. Martin.

Our KidZone framework will be a little different this year. We plan to have teams of four teachers each for three groups: Pre-K/K, Grades 1-3, and Grades 4-6. Each Sunday there will be one teacher and at least one assistant in each classroom, and we will have additional teen helpers as well.

Just as Fr. Mark has taught that the structure of the Eucharist is a fourfold action of Taking, Blessing, Breaking, and Sharing, our KidZone classes will have a basic structure of Gathering, Praying, Playing, and Sending. We will gather in the classrooms at 9:45 and begin with prayer. Then we will explore the day's topic or story through creative play and interaction, followed by being sent forth to worship with the church family after the Peace. I pray that you will make the commitment to share your children with us for an hour each Sunday. It will be time well spent for all of us!

Join with voices from around the Diocese as we celebrate 225 years of serving Rhode Island. On Saturday, September 12, the Diocese will participate in a WaterFire, providing interactive activities and musical performances. The First Baptist Church in America
75 North Main Street
Providence, RI  02903
Free Admission

Dr. Jeannine Jordan, organist and David Jordan, media artist, share the fascinating story of how the organ developed in America -- from its roots in Europe to becoming the premiere social instrument in America.  From Sea to Shining Sea features a program of some of the most-beloved American concert organ works and a narration that encompasses how American history interacted with the development of the organ.

From Sea to Shining Sea also features not only stunning visuals, but also a live video feed so every audience member can see how the instrument is played with the amazing coordination of feet, hands, and body to produce music filled with color and imagination. This event is sponsored by the RI Chapter American Guild of Organists.
