Morning Prayer
| |
It is my practice to endeavor to say Morning Prayer in the Chapel of the Church on Tuesday -Friday each week at 9am. I would be interested in knowing of anyone who would like to join me. Morning Prayer takes about 25 minutes. I would also like to hear from those of you working downtown, which I believe is referred to as downcity here, who might be interested in saying Evening Prayer and or celebrating Eucharist at least one evening a week at around 5.30PM. Please email me your thoughts. Best wishes. Mark+

Rector Recap
| |
I remember a friend of mine who is Canon for Congregational Formation and Development in the Diocese of Connecticut used this phrase: 'drinking from the fire hose', in the first few months of taking up his post. This phrase has been uppermost in my mind these last couple of weeks as I have been working hard to stimulate new interest and energy within the St. Martin's community for our program ministries.
The theme of last Sunday's sermon was 'Making a Difference'. A cry erupts: how can we make a difference? Because we often don't see how we really do make a difference through the ordinary everyday events of living our lives, our cry from the heart becomes -how can we experience ourselves making a difference? You can read more about this at: http://relationalrealities.com/.
On Tuesday evening of this last week, I was present at a very, very well attended Outreach Ministries meeting and felt buoyed-up by the energy and deep commitment of those involved in these ministries. My particular thanks go to John Bracken for his effective leadership of the Outreach Ministries. During the meeting we heard from all the outreach ministry initiatives including:
*From the team in the Thrifty Goose (Thrift Shop), and the Cloak (clothing for the homeless), continuing to be for me a wonderful model for how I would like all our ministries to be, i.e. a team effort with people encouraging one another and having fun together.
*Volunteer and financial support for the Epiphany Soup Kitchen located at S. Stephen's and City Meal Site at All Saints' are examples of how we make a difference in the wider community through our involvement with collaborative enterprises. In that vein we were able to offer some small funding to Midnight Moment, a community initiative that makes and distributes food to the homeless.
*Hearing that our Episcopal Charities team is within $400 of their target of nearly $17,000. This is a tremendous result placing St. Martin's at the top of parishes contributing to Episcopal Charities and so a big thank you to Elke Moonan, Gail Peet, and Kurt Loell and all their pledgers. For more information on Episcopal Charities RI click here.
*Agreeing to review our Backpack Ministry.
Outreach ministry is definitely an area where by working together we are making a difference in the world around us!
Another encouraging experience came on Wednesday evening when we had a meeting of around 20 people interested in learning more about strengthening our Altar Guild.
Also on my mind is our upcoming Annual Renewal Program. The Annual Renewal Campaign refers a process of intentional conversation inviting you to revisit the matter of your financial support for the mission for St Martin's. Our intentional conversation will commence on Sunday October 19th and culminate on November 16th, which is the date of the parish's celebration of my institution and installation as St. Martin's 12th rector.
Throughout this month our intentional conversation will help us celebrate the enormous human potential within our parish community. In doing so we will explore two key themes, one of financial responsibility, and the other of spiritual integrity. The first theme concerns our mindfully, and prayerfully reconnecting with the sources of gratitude to God for the good things we have been given to enjoy. Gratitude connects us to living more generous an spiritually fulfilling lives.
So, after and eventful and busy week it only remains for me to say: I look forward to seeing many of you in Church, this coming Sunday!
