Rector Recap

The Rector's welcome to Homecoming Sunday

In my sermon last Sunday entitled: Jesus, take the wheel, I quoted from Matthew Skinner who comments:

As we journey soon into the new beginnings of post-Labor Day autumn, what will it mean to deny ourselves, take up our crosses, and follow Jesus? More, certainly, than giving up a few things; more than suffering as part of the human condition; more than moving forward on new paths-

Although we hope to be able to add a weekly sermon pod cast to our website soon at the moment you can read my exploration at: relationalrealities.com and at: https://www.facebook.com/stmartinsprovidence?ref=hl

As we approach autumn's transitions finding that we belong to one another is a very appropriate way to welcome you all back for Homecoming Sunday. Have you noticed that while the calendar year runs from January to December, the significant rhythm to our lives actually runs from September to June?

I have been so looking forward to the beginning of September, and while I am experiencing a little anxiety in anticipating a sharp step-up in the pace of parish life, I am very excited about meeting so many more of you.

This Fall marks not only the start of the rhythm of a new annual Parish Program, it also marks the commencement of a new period of expectation, which inevitably accompanies the arrival of a new Rector in the life of the parish. I liken my arrival to the dropping into place of a needed piece of a larger picture puzzle. Sometimes it only needs one piece, on its own insignificant, around which a renewed picture begins to coalesce.

I invite us to consider ourselves as a community on a journey towards a deeper engagement with our individual interests and passions. Discipleship is never about duty or obligation. Discipleship is passionate engagement. In today's society, many of us feel powerless to make any real difference. Through our discipleship as members of St Martin's Community we have an opportunity to bring about change in the world around us. Stimulated by the energy of our passions and interests, through we celebrate our becoming agents in the building-up of the Kingdom of God in this world.

Shaping the direction of the journey requires the energy and imagination of everyone in our community. Together, we bring to life our Parish motto:

Come as you are, Grow with us in faith, Go forth in peace.

Together we seek the wisdom of the Christian Tradition in facing-up to the challenges that confront Christian living in the 21st century. Our particular characteristic as Episcopalians is our willingness to tolerate living in the tension of the yet-to-become-known. It's in the heart of this tension that we realize the fullness of God's dream for us.

Looking ahead to the rest of September in particular I want to draw your attention to an event we are co-sponsoring along with Fr. David Aims of All Saint's Memorial Church in central Providence, and the Diocese of Rhode Island on an effective response to the Ebola epidemic in West and Central Africa. Chaired by Donald Cunnigen, a member of our 8 am congregation the seminar and discussion will start at 7pm and refreshments will be provided. Please look for the announcement about this event in this e-news.

It seems that all that is left for me to say at present is all aboard, let's get going! See you on September 7th for Homecoming Sunday 2014.

Yours in Christ,

Mark+

Morning Prayer

It is my practice to endeavor to say Morning Prayer in the Chapel of the Church on Tuesday -Friday each week at 9am.
I would be interested in knowing of anyone who would like to join me. Morning Prayer takes about 25 minutes.

I would also like to hear from those of you working downtown, which I believe is referred to as downcity here, who might be interested in saying Evening Prayer and or celebrating Eucharist at least one evening a week at around 5.30PM.

Please email me with your thoughts.

Best wishes.

Mark+
