Morning Prayer

It is my practice to endeavor to say Morning Prayer in the Chapel of the Church on Tuesday -Friday each week at 9am.
I would be interested in knowing of anyone who would like to join me. Morning Prayer takes about 25 minutes.

I would also like to hear from those of you working downtown, which I believe is referred to as downcity here, who might be interested in saying Evening Prayer and or celebrating Eucharist at least one evening a week at around 5.30PM.

Please email me with your                            thoughts.

Best wishes.

Rector Recap

I have been enjoying a few days of rest on Martha's Vineyard. This is a place I have only ever heard about and so it is very interesting to finally be able to visit it and see the variety of settings the island offers. However, because of these days of rest and reflection I have not composed a Rector's Recap. Instead, vulnerability - the theme of last week's sermon still powerfully stays with me and I would commend you to read more about my exploration of the experience of vulnerability at relationalrealities.com or go to St Martins Facebook page.

Tomorrow/Saturday at 4 pm we will all celebrate the life of Sonia Zell, who passed from this life two weeks ago now. Sonia, was from a generation of Episcopalians for whom the responsibilities of service to the institution of the Church were second nature. I have often noticed that people of Sonia's generation bring to the service of God an intuitive humility. She knew about accepting responsibility. She was faithful and regular in worship, committed to service both within the Church and beyond. Yet, if asked about the state of her personal relationship with God, she would have looked rather nonplussed. Sonia maintained that very pragmatic Englishness when it comes to matters of faith, which is characterized by the attitude:
there's too much work to be done so let's just get on and do it. Sonia typified that wonderful expression you will spy if you have occasion to visit me in the Rector's Study: keep calm and carry on!

The Pew Survey into Religious Attitudes among Americans shows a shift over the last thirty years. Thirty years ago the majority of Episcopalians and other Christians form the mainline traditions ticked the box 'religious but not spiritual' . Today the majority, tick the box 'religious and spiritual'. I imagine that Sonia would not have welcomed her priest questioning her about her sense of spirituality. For one thing she would have told me to mind my own business! For her and her generation such things are after all, private! Yet, this is where I detect that intuitive humility. To think about having a personal relationship with God would have struck her as too self-centered a preoccupation. I imagine her asking:  Why should God with all the things God has to attend to waste time noticing me?

For those of you enjoying some time away I hope it continues to be a time of relaxation and re-creation. For those back in town or who have never left - see you in Church this Sunday!

Yours in Christ,

 Mark+
