St. Martin's Church

April 9                                                                    Mark 10:1-16

Here's one of my favorite passages in the Scripture.  People were bringing children to Jesus.  Their noise, energy and excitement must have irritated the disciples.  The disciples rebuked the children.  How often have we witnessed this: in church, the doctor's office, the grocery store, the bank - anywhere children are 'disturbing' others?  We often see parents shushing or other adults shunning.  And doesn't it break your heart some?  It does mine.

Having struggled with infertility and having several close friends who have not been able to conceive, this always pains me.  Children are a GIFT!  They ARE loud, energetic, wiggly, excited, noisy and even sometimes irritating.  But, that is EXACTLY how God made them.  And God said they (and we) are Good.

This must be why I have been called to a ministry of formation.  Come see our Church School in session!  It's loud.  There's a tremendous amount of energy upstairs!  It births creativity and fosters community.  The energy of children nourishes the soul and lightens the Spirit.

It is OK and indeed Good to "Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God".  Jesus took them all in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands upon them.  Oh, that today we would all do the same!
