From the Interim Rector
| | |
I wanted to share with those who were not in church this past Sunday a version of comments I made at the announcement time.
We heard two Sundays ago now an update from the Discernment Team about their progress towards finding a new rector for St. Martin's. In fact, they were not with us this past Sunday, nor will they be this Sunday, because they are meeting with the two candidates, including being with them as they preach and preside at the liturgy at another church. Over the past several months, many people have wondered if I might be part of that process; would the Discernment Team include me in their considerations - some have suggested that would be a good thing. While that has been flattering and I appreciate it very much, I think it's important to be clear about the understanding that the Vestry and I had, along with the Bishop's Office, when they called me to be the Interim Rector and the Bishop gave his approval. That understanding (and I think this was shared with the congregation before I arrived way back in the summer time) is that our time together would follow the basic rules of the diocese, namely, that the interim rector does not get considered for the permanent position. This leaves both parties free to get on with the work they are called to do. The other piece of our understanding is that I would continue to look for my own next ministry position. To that end, my name is currently under consideration in two parishes outside of the diocese, and there may be another interim position opening up within the diocese.
I bid your prayers for the Discernment Team and for me as we both continue our discernment.

Many thanks to Sr. Sarah Randall of the Society of St. Margaret for leading a wonderful Lenten quiet day last Saturday, and then coming back to preach for us and celebrate the 8:00 am Eucharist on Sunday. Several people have asked how to learn more about St. Margaret's and/or receive information about their activities. Their website is www.ssmbos.org. At the bottom of each page is a place to add your e-mail address to receive updates from the sisters as they sponsor retreats, evensongs, and other special services. |

Finance Corner

On behalf of the Vestry I want to thank the 145 persons or families who have made pledges totaling $307,766 toward the cost of operating our parish this year. However, we need $32,234 more in order to reach our goal of $340,000 out of a budget totaling $551,510.
St. Martin's is blessed with beautiful functional facilities that would cost over $8 million to replicate. In addition we have over $2 million of endowment to generate income to help pay today's expenses. Those of us who are members today benefit tremendously from the generosity and faithfulness of our predecessors. Let's join them in showing how much we care about the ministry of St. Martin's to our parish family and the world.

Discernment Team News
| |
The Discernment Team searching for a settled-Rector for our church is interviewing two candidates here in Providence. One has already been interviewed during March 21-23. The second candidate interview will take place Mar 28-30. We have already had extensive conversations, heard from references, held our own discussions. Now we are in the process of showing off our church and Providence, responding to their questions, hearing them preach and conducting liturgy at a somewhat distant location. Both candidates are male, have considerable church and life experience, exhibit fine gifts and skills for priesthood and church ministry. The Discernment Team appreciates your thoughts, support and prayers. We are honored to be trusted for this important move forward. You are a great church family to be partnered with.
