Our Book of Common Prayer reminds us that, "The Holy Eucharist, the principal act of Christian worship on the Lord's Day and other major feasts, and Daily Morning and Evening Prayer...are the regular services appointed for public worship in this Church." (p. 13) Last week I reflected a bit on the Eucharist as our journey with and to Christ. Now we turn to the Daily Office (Morning/Evening Prayer, Noonday Prayer, Compline) in general, and Morning and Evening Prayer in particular, as our other ongoing encounter with Christ.
Whereas the Eucharist invites us to meet Jesus in bread and wine, Morning and Evening Prayer invite us to meet Jesus in Scripture - in readings from Old and New Testament, and especially in the Psalms. Our spiritual life that begins on Sunday then continues on a daily basis, alone or with others. The daily readings, arranged in a two year cycle, will take us through the bulk of the Bible, while the assigned Psalms will have us reading the Psalter pretty much every seven weeks. This becomes a disciplined, step by step engagement with God's word, as well as giving us prayers to either start, or begin to bring to a close, our day.
While we can see the Eucharist as a joyous feast and celebration, the Daily Office becomes our daily meal. Not every breakfast, lunch, or dinner is a mountain top experience, but they are the meals that sustain us and give us life. The Daily Office does not intend to wow us or bring an emotional high (something many people mistakenly look for in worship). Instead, passage by passage, Psalm by Psalm, prayer by prayer, it gradually shapes and forms us more and more into the people of God. Take a look in the Prayer Book if you are not already familiar with this pattern of prayer. I'd be happy to talk with anyone about how to get started praying the Daily Office.

'Walk in my Shoes'
| | |
We all put on our pants one leg at a time.
I heard this a lot when I was a young woman working in Hollywood. There is no need to act as if these movie stars are any different from me, we all put out pants on one leg at a time.
And, I urge you to consider for a moment and in those moments that you tie your shoes or pull up on your boot straps ... one at a time... consider that we are all human.
We are all cut of the same cloth. We all have particular needs.
My work with the Cloak keeps me grounded in the everydayness of socks and underwear. And, with winter temperatures, there is now a new need for boots and shoes.
So today, we are starting a campaign...
'Walk in my shoes'
$30 buys a new pair of men's work boots. Buy 1 or 5, but please consider buying something to help. Or, give us your gently used shoes and boots. When you are homeless, your boots are your car, your boots are your transportation.
Please put your boot donations in the 'bin of the month' for Harrington House.
Through boots, we will bring the glory of God to the streets of Providence.
