EnLightened News
December 2012
Greetings!

Please know that you are receiving this periodic newsletter because you signed up for Kim Sheridan's mailing list. Thank you for your interest and the encouragement and feedback so many of you have sent our way over the years.

In this newsletter, I hope you will enjoy the second installment of Dakota's beautiful story, and the poem adapted and so graciously shared by grief counselor (and much more!) Barbara Meyers. This month's Animal Health Feature sheds some light on the issue of cancer in our four-legged loved ones, and animal testing is addressed in our Animal Action Alert of the month. Please take note of what you can do to improve the lives of animals who are not yours, but certainly deserve their health and freedom.

To quickly update you, our relocation continues, with new bumps in the road around every corner. This is further delaying our ability to fill Healthy ChickŪ and Healthy HunkŪ orders. It is our sincere intention to have this rectified in January. We thank you again for your patience!

I wish you all togetherness and joy this holiday season, and, above all else, I wish for peace and a higher level of consciousness on Earth this new year, and always.

Happy New Year,
Ashley Bass

Don't tell me that you understand,

Don't tell me that you know.

Don't tell me that I will survive,

How I will surely grow.

Don't tell me this is just a test,

That I am truly blessed,

That I am chosen for this task,

Apart from all the rest.

Don't come at me with answers that

can only come from me,

Don't tell me how my grief will pass,

That I will soon be free.

Don't stand in pious judgment of

the bonds I must unite.

Don't tell me how to suffer,

And don't tell me how to cry.

My life is filled with heartache.

My pain is all I see.

But I need you and I need your love,

unconditionally.

Animal Action Alert
STOP ANIMAL TESTING

No Testing

by Ashley

I was stunned when I read that only 43% of adults oppose animal testing in scientific research.  I consider it such an abomination, I suppose I have a hard time seeing past my own view.

The horrors of animal testing are simply inexcusable.  Minimal protections (in the U.S.) under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) do not go nearly far enough.  Further, the most commonly used animals in experimentation -- rats, mice, birds, reptiles, and amphibians -- are not protected under the act at all!  Not only are they exempted from pain relief, their numbers -- whether killed, tortured, or simply isolated -- do NOT even have to be reported. These unprotected animals make up over 90% of animals suffering and dying in labs. The number of animals who lack any protection at all, in U.S. research facilities, is estimated by some to be over 100 million a year. That is unfathomable!

The vast majority of findings from animal testing are not applicable to the human population.  Regarding the efficacy of animal experimentation, the former Director of the National Cancer Institute is quoted saying, "We've cured mice of cancer for decades, and it simply didn't work in humans." HIV vaccinations have had similar results.

Then, there is the issue of continued animal testing by the cosmetic industry. Don't these people know what is safe by now? My body care products, that are NOT tested on animals, have never burnt or blinded me!

Regardless, there are effective humane methods of research that can replace these torturous methods, including, but not limited to: studies on volunteer human populations, cell and tissue culture studies [in vitro studies], and computer-model testing.

It is overdue that we, as individuals and communities, begin forcing actions we can live with.  We have overlooked too much for too long. The situation, and the lack of compassion on this planet, is simply untenable.  Let us look to the many positive examples and make a change!

DO WHAT YOU CAN
TO STOP ANIMAL TESTING

1. Don't purchase products from companies that test on animals. It's simple enough -- vote with your dollars! A list of some humane companies can be found here:
This list is not exhaustive, but it is a good place to start. Call or check the websites of the companies you do business with. If you don't like what you find out, let them know it and stop buying their products. There are many wonderful guilt-free choices out there!

2. Don't give money to charities that use donations to fund testing on animals. You may search for some charities that do not support animal testing here:
3. Contact the tax-payer funded U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director, and tell him you don't want your tax dollars used to fund inhumane animal experimentation.* Almost 47% of NIH funded research involves experimentation on animals, and the NIH budget was $29 billion in 2009 (sourced from a PETA article)!

*Please be respectful!

4. Voice your opinion about this to anyone who will listen (and maybe those who don't appear to be listening!) -- family, friends, strangers, a company, or anyone else. The more educated you are on this topic, the more effective dialogue you can have.

Kim's Note
Kim

Well, once again, my unbelievably hectic schedule has held up this month's newsletter, as I haven't had a spare moment to sit down and write a simple note. Many sincere apologies! Ashley has done a beautiful job with this newsletter once again, and I'm extremely grateful. Without her, this newsletter would no longer even be happening, as there just are no longer enough hours in the day for everything I wish to do and everything constantly pulling at me. It is truly important to me to stay in touch with all of you; so, many thanks to Ashley for making this happen! I know that Ashley has a very busy schedule as well, so I'm truly grateful for the time she devotes to this, as well as all of the other things she does.

Meanwhile, I'm still deeply enmeshed in a gargantuan relocation -- moving our household, our businesses, the Rat Refuge, and the Fish Refuge. I've been filming the many phases of the fish/pond relocation, which has taken many months of planning and many stages of execution; so, at some point this will become a film on how to safely and humanely relocate a pond full of fish -- without any plastic bags!

This entire relocation has taken on a life of its own (complete with unanticipated delays, unexpected changes in course, and more), and it has been extremely challenging to juggle the move along with all of the other work obligations constantly tugging at me. Sleep is scarce and stress is high, but I've always felt that life's challenges build character -- so I'd say I'm a real character at this point! ;)

Remember my note awhile back, when I mentioned that life was giving me some wake-up calls -- presumably to try to get me to slow down and not do so much? Well, apparently I didn't get the lesson, as my latest wake-up call involved taking a spill while carrying a large load down a flight of stone stairs, resulting in a very damaged ankle. As I hobble around in my stabilizer boot, impatient with myself for moving far too slowly for my crazy schedule, I realize that my life is still a bit out of balance. So, this is a perfect time for some New Year's Resolutions! I am hereby resolving to take better care of myself, to find a way to do less, to delegate more, to keep moving a bit more slowly even after my ankle fully heals, and to not feel guilty for taking care of myself!

How about you? Are you doing too much also? Are you caring for others but neglecting yourself? Those of us who walk the path of compassion often see all too clearly how much still needs to be done to make this world a better place for ALL. In that process, we often forget about ourselves and our own needs. We often neglect ourselves, which can result in illness or (in my case) injury. But ultimately, this doesn't help anyone. After all, we need to be strong, vibrant, and in good condition so that we can be around to care for others -- AND ourselves -- for as long as possible! :)

I sincerely hope you all have enjoyed a peaceful holiday season, and I wish you the best of health and happiness in the coming year!

With blessings,
Kim

Dakota Returns
By Gina Olivieri of West Islip, NY

[To read last month's installment of Dakota's story,
please CLICK HERE.]

After Dakota's passing, we had reached out to Patty Summers for a consult.  I knew from Kim's book that she came highly recommended so that's who we used.

The call was beyond incredible.  Patty taped it and sent it to us after the session. I listened to it several times.  She was accurate with so many things about Dakota. During the reading, I had her ask Dakota a question: "Will you come back to us again through spirit, through another dog?"  Dakota's answer was, "yes!"

He asked if we minded if he came back as the same kind of dog.  Dakota told Patty to make sure we knew that he would not look exactly the same. He wanted us to know that he felt very strongly about coming back as a male.  The vision she saw was of a Siberian Husky with a lot more black than Dakota, especially on his face.  Patty saw a male "dad" dog, a little taller than most Siberians. She mentioned that he was actually "shopping" at that time. Dakota let us know he would come from a family, not a breeder, and that he would be "east" of us.  Patty told us that we might want to call our vet to put it out there that we're looking, but she said that ultimately Dakota would find us.  This was in October of 2011.

After our session, even though I wasn't sure, or ready to get another dog, I called my vet's office and told them to keep us in mind if they ever heard of anyone having Siberian Husky puppies. We continued to grieve for Dakota, and it was hard getting through the holidays without him. Then one day, at the end of January 2012, on a Saturday morning, my phone rang at 9:00 am. It was my vet. I couldn't imagine why they'd be calling. Five six week old puppies were just rescued from the animal shelter. Their owner was an older man who had a heart attack and was hospitalized in poor condition. The animal shelter had the five puppies, their parents, and their two-year-old sister.

This was a Saturday. By Monday morning, we had our new baby boy, Nikko Dakota Olivieri! Yes, he is a male, and, YES, he has a lot of black coloring!  Nikko looks EXACTLY like his dad, who had to be the image Patty was seeing -- he is black and big and tall, especially for a husky!  When you figure out when we had our session with Patty (mid October), and when Nikko was born (mid December), the timing makes perfect sense.

So, in the end, it WAS our vet who called us, Nikko WAS east of us, he WAS NOT from a breeder, and he has a lot more black fur than Dakota had.  There are SO MANY things Nikko does that Dakota did -- it is incredible!  I've  stopped mourning the loss of Dakota because my husband and I feel like we have him back again.  When we look into his eyes we just feel Dakota.

September 2nd made one year since Dakota passed, and its hard to believe a year has gone by. We were blessed to have him in our lives for 14 years, and now we're blessed again because we truly feel he's back.

Animal Health Feature:
Sourced from Kim's Q&A on Rat Health, but edited and added to by Ashley

Cancer plagues both humans and companion animals in the 21st century. The numbers are truly staggering. One in three dogs and one in every four cats is expected to die of cancer, and it is increasingly likely that humans who live long enough will also develop some form of cancer.

Prevention must be where we begin fighting this nightmare. Our bodies, and those of our animals, produce many abnormal cells in our lifetimes. This only becomes a problem when these cells are left to multiply in an unregulated way. Our first line of defense is to support the immune system so it can do its job killing off these damaged cells.

An organic, plant-based diet for you and your animal is the best way to do this. Animal flesh and animal products -- such as dairy and eggs -- are carcinogenic. They should be avoided. For more information on how to change an animal's diet safely, please see the "Vegan Pets" resources on the Compassion Circle website, and stay tuned for Part II of this article in next month's newsletter. In a world where the standard companion animal diet, and standard human diet (American anyway), is seriously lacking in the fresh, raw foods that provide the nutrients the body needs to thrive, superfoods and supplementation are a necessary way to achieve optimum health.

Our world is, unfortunately, not conducive to health these days. Our bodies are confronted by countless toxins on a daily basis. These toxins weaken the immune system and directly impact the cell's ability to function as it should. Some of these toxins are assaulting us by way of the food we eat (especially GMOs), the water we drink, the air we breathe, alcohol, pharmaceutical drugs, caffeine, cigarette smoke, vaccines, plastics, dental amalgams, household cleaners, personal care and cosmetic products, outgassing from carpets and pressure-treated wood, air fresheners, paints, bug sprays, perfumed candles, radioactive isotopes, the electromagnetic frequencies that surround us, chemtrails, negative thoughts, and much more. We need to distance ourselves and our animals from these things as much as possible and give our bodies the tools they need to detoxify.

Here are some of the things you can do to help your animal thrive: provide only purified water, feed an organic, plant-based diet (see resources below), aid detoxification with a zeolite supplement and/or clays designed for internal use, support their immune system with Green Mush™ (or another antioxidant rich superfood designed for animals), maintain their dental health, consult a holistic vet who can have a real conversation about the dangers of vaccinations and pharmaceutical drugs, and keep them as far away from wireless devices -- internet routers, cellphones, iPads, and the like -- as possible. Most importantly, do not give your animal fluoridated/chlorinated tap water or feed them processed foods that contain things as horrifying as rendered animals and the agents used to euthanize them! It is never too late to begin the above measures, but please do make any dietary changes gradually and under the supervision of your animal's healthcare provider.

Please stay tuned for Part II of this article in next month's newsletter -- where more helpful suggestions and resources will be forthcoming....

Final Thought

Please remember that, in addition to animal shelters, there are breed-specific rescues full of companion animals who need loving homes.
