Stony Lane School receives Blue Ribbon Award
| | Stony Lane, an Open Circle School in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School, a national program that recognizes excellence in schools. Congratulations to the Stony Lane School on behalf of Open Circle! Principal Ed Ferrario credits Open Circle as a key factor in being named a National 2013 Blue Ribbon School. Students, teachers, and staff at the Stoney Lane School take great pride in supporting each other through thoughtful reflection and treating others as we want to be treated, Ferrario explains. "A positive school climate was one of the criteria used to measure their high performing school. Open Circle gives students a safe environment to share thoughts and feeling and to support one another with strategies," says Ferrario, "When children feel safe and their voices are heard and supported, their academic progress will benefit." In November Ferrario traveled to Washington D.C. to accept the honor. |
Open Circle Announces NoVo Foundation Grant, joins Learning Network
| |
We're delighted to share the news that Open Circle is the recipient of a three-year, $600,000 grant from NoVo Foundation (NoVo)!
This capacity-building grant will help us increase our program scalability and bring evidence-based social and emotional learning to an additional 30,000 children in three years. New offerings will include train-the-trainer programming, online coaching and training modules, and an online resource portal.
NoVo is dedicated to catalyzing a transformation in global society, moving from a culture of domination to one of equality and partnership. NoVo supports the development of capacities in people -individually and collectively - to help create a caring and balanced world. NoVo envisions a world that operates on the principles of mutual respect, collaboration, and civic participation, thereby reversing the old paradigm predicated on hierarchy, violence, and the subordination of girls and women.
We are deeply grateful to NoVo Foundation for their support and look forward to sharing news of our growth and scaling successes!

PBIS & Open Circle White Paper
| |
This new white paper outlines similarities and differences in the principles of Open Circle and PBIS. It also provides clear, actionable guidance on integrating Open Circle programming and the PBIS framework.
If Open Circle and PBIS are implemented in isolation, schools not only miss an opportunity for greater impact, they risk overwhelming or confusing students and staff. When Open Circle and PBIS are well-integrated, learning in one will reinforce the other and benefits to students will amplify.
Our hope is that this document will be a helpful resource for all staff at your school.
