3/15/2015 - "The Graduate" Auditions Begin

Here is the March 2015 edition of The Harlequin. We're very excited to present our first musical of the 2015 season - How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. You are REALLY going to enjoy this lively production!

(A little trivia: How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying won the Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 1962. Only eight musicals have won the Pulitzer Prize in Drama - one per decade from the 1930s to the 1990s.)

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
Presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

Directed by Rick Steinberg

Choreographed by Miriam Durrie-Kirsch

Music Directed by Rachael Pugh

ABOUT THE SHOW: Power, ambition, greed ... it's just another day at the office! From the authors of Guys and Dolls comes one of the most delightfully irreverent musicals of all time. J. Pierrepont Finch uses a little "how-to" handbook to climb the corporate ladder from lowly window washer to high-powered executive -- tackling such familiar but potent dangers as the aggressively compliant "company man"; the office party; backstabbing co-workers; caffeine addiction; and, of course, true love. Winner of the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, this delightful musical melds wit, comedy, and romance together to hilarious perfection. ~ RATED PG-13

Member Spotlight - Richard 'Dick' Johnson

Our first Arts Advocate Award honoree, Richard "Dick" Johnson, was chosen as the Legacy Advocate Award recipient for his long-standing support and enrichment of Conejo Players Theatre -- as well as for his support of our local theatre community. Mr. Johnson's award-winning career began while pursuing his Masters at UCLA, where he won the Oren Stein Memorial Award. Later, he got a job at local TV station KHJ-TV Channel 9 (now known as KCAL-9), where he was a "jack of all trades" -- taking on many different positions including stage manager, set designer, graphic artist, producer, and director. As Executive Producer at KHJ-TV, he received Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards for several productions from 1982-89.

It was during his time at Channel 9 that he began his valuable commitment with the all-volunteer Conejo Players Theatre in Thousand Oaks. He designed and directed A Thousand Clowns in 1969 -- and to date has designed and built over 50 sets and directed almost half that number of shows for the theatre. He retired his position of Executive Director several years ago, after serving 11 three-year terms. An Honorary Life Member of the Players, Mr. Johnson has received 37 CPT Harlequin Awards.

He's held several other positions within the arts locally, including two terms with the City of Thousand Oaks Arts Commission; Campaign Director for the Alliance for the Arts, raising the endowment for the performing arts at the Civic Arts Plaza; and is currently the Chairman of the Board for the California Museum of Art Thousand Oaks (CMATO). Other achievements include: The 1993 Excellence in Art Certificate Award; the 1994 Encore Award for Achievement in the Arts presented by the City of Thousand Oaks Arts Commission; and the 1995 Twilight Award for his support of the performing arts ... just to name a few.

The City of Thousand Oaks - Civic Advocate

Conejo Players Theatre's inaugural Arts Advocate Awards was a heartfelt ceremony that honored and highlighted the amazing work of local theatre champions Richard "Dick" Johnson; Corey Fogelmanis of Disney Channel's Girl Meets World; and the City of Thousand Oaks.

Each honoree has played a foundational part in strengthening CPT, other area theatres, and the arts in general. They are shining examples of people who are guided by an appreciation of the arts; who understand their importance in the community; and who are ambassadors for arts awareness. In addition to the awards, the evening's entertainment included songs hand-picked to honor each recipient. The night was capped off with a champagne dessert reception in the backstage area of the theatre, where attendees were able to offer personal thank- yous to the honorees.

Deidre Parmenter, CPT President, explained the motivation for the event: "As Conejo Players Theatre starts on a journey toward solidifying our future with a new Capital Campaign, we wanted to reflect a bit on why we do what we do. The arts are hugely important to us as individuals and to our community at large. We are where we are today because of individual contributions and a supportive community. Honoring those that advocate both for Conejo Players and for the arts in general was an easy choice. It's a tradition we hope to continue."
