Costuming Workshop Series

with Beth Glasner

Three Wednesdays: February 11, 18, and 25 from 5PM to 7PM

This Conejo Players Theatre workshop will be structured in a way that you'll learn something if you're only able to attend one session ... and you'll gain that much more knowledge if you attend all three sessions! The goal of our Costume Workshop is -- after three 2-hour sessions -- to leave you feeling as if you could either assist in costuming a show, or possibly feeling brave enough do it yourself!

Session One:

The importance of "The Measurement Sheet" will be discussed. Everyone will practice measuring someone else. That same session, we'll move on to the importance of reading through the script and how to pick out the important notes, lines, and ideas in the script that point to costumes. We will also discuss a typical costume budget, and how to keep track of all monies spent. Everyone will go home with the completed measurement sheet of him or herself, a tape measure, and a highlighted section of script.

Session Two:

We'll go into the CPT costume loft and explore all the different types of clothing, shoes, hats, and accessories that are necessary for costuming a show. The participants will be put into groups of 2 or 3, with a list of actors (including their measurements) and a scene from a play or musical; they'll then choose costumes for the actors from the loft.  We'll also discuss alterations, upkeep during performances, and cleaning the costumes after the show closes.

Session Three:

We'll spend this last session looking at different costume house websites on the Internet and discuss renting costumes.  Then the participants will spend time exploring CPT's costume construction room. We will talk about fabrics and trims, as well as "Velcro vs. snaps vs. zippers" on costumes. We'll look at patterns for costumes and discuss how it's sometimes best to make the costume, to fit the actor exactly. We will also discuss budgets again, and talk about how to properly finish the show and turn in all requisite paperwork.

All workshop sessions will be held at Conejo Players Theatre -- 351 S. Moorpark Rd. Thousand Oaks, CA 91361-1008

NOTE:  $5 registration fee for each class, plus a $2 material fee (to be collected at the first class).
