Neil Simon's comedy, 45 Seconds from Broadway, is as much about the setting for the play as it is about the characters that appear in its four scenes. The setting is a restaurant - a diner/coffee shop placed in what was once the fancy ballroom of the Hotel Edison in New York's Broadway theater district. The Cafe Edison - a place where playwrights and producers, actors, stagehands and tourists could commune while stuffing down the last bites of an oh-so-hefty blintz - became known as the "Polish Tea Room" when a Broadway theater executive asserted that it was superior to the more upscale "Russian Tea Room."
On any given day, the likes of Neil Simon, Jackie Mason, Tony Roberts, Linda Lavin and Wendy Wasserstein could be spotted in a booth or at the counter. Producers and theater owners would kibitz or pore over contracts and scripts. The playwright August Wilson reportedly made notes for three of his scripts on Cafe Edison napkins. Neil Simon said "there is something magical about this place" and 45 Seconds From Broadway displays his affection for the Polish Tea Room.
The Conejo Players Theater production of 45 Seconds emulates a "working" Cafe Edison. Visitors enter from the adjacent hotel and from the street entrance on 47th street. The play features twelve characters - a Broadway comic, a London producer, a South African playwright, an aspiring actress, avid theater goers, an eccentric mystery woman and her husband - all seeking the hospitality of the Polish Tea Room and the generosity of its beloved owners. Audiences become seasonal visitors and with each visit will catch a glimpse of the unique camaraderie the Cafe Edison offers.
