Marty Shannon
Dedicated Volunteer for 34 Years

Marty shares his recollections
of 34 years of delivering Meals on Wheels to clients in the metro KC.  We will miss him, as we thank him for his dedication.

"The meals at that time were dispersed from a large brick building (a former school possibly) in Westport that was also the home of the KC ballet. Through the years we distributed from many locations (primarily churches). At that time and for many y
ears our director was Jim Doebele, a really great gentleman.  He just recently (within the past 8-10 years ago) moved on to another challenge.

Back to Basics for the Senior Companion Program

When Bob joined Shepherd's Center Central (SCC) in Fall 2015, he brought with him over 20 years' experience in the non-profit world.

Now as Program Manager for the Senior Companion Program (SCP) Bob has been steering it back to basics. A vital step is to be sure every working Senior Companion has provided updated income history, a yearly physical and other paperwork all required annually by grant funders.

Wheels That Care Drivers Receive
Letters of Appreciation

The Wheels That Care program provides volunteers to drive older adults to essential destinations, like the grocery store, doctor's office, or hairdresser.

It's said that volunteering is good for the soul, and a message of thanks from a thoughtful client can make a good day even better. Here are a few notes Deb Dickinson, Volunteer & Program Manager has received from the clients that use the services of the Wheels That Care Program.

See what clients said, continue reading.
SCC Thanks Its Volunteers
with a Holiday Party

In mid-December, 2015 SCC hosted the annual Holiday Party for Volunteers. Over 250 guests, including Community Partners and funders, mingled, enjoying the fellowship and festive entertainment. The great eats were generously provided by Cosentino's.

Lots of Hands Bring Holiday Cheer

For many years, Deb Dickinson, Volunteer and Program Manager, along with SCC volunteers, community partners and neighbors have pitched in to make the holidays bright for homebound older adults.
The following community partners circulate a "wish list" of items to their congregations and employees.

We Appreciate Our Versatile Volunteers

Many SCC volunteer activities are not for a specific program or project.

We appreciate the flexibility and willingness of these volunteers who help wherever and whenever they are needed.

Terri Messer delivers for MOW and works in the kitchen when she is needed. She also does the weekly Adventures in Learning newsletter, plus helps around the office at Oak Street.

Thanks for
all you do!

On the weekend of November 7 & 8, 2015 Shepherd's Center Central once again hosted its annual KC Rakes! event. Each year volunteers provide free yard raking service for adults over the age of 65 who live in the  Kansas City service area.

The program aims to assist older homeowners who cannot afford to pay for yard services, don't have family who can assist them, and who can no longer do yard work themselves. For many, it means so much to have assistance and remain independent in their own home.
