Southern Pine Composite Lumber Price - January 2013

In the third week of January 2013, Forest2Market's framing composite weighted average price hit the highest level since we began reporting southern yellow pine lumber prices: $409/MBF.
The Forestweb N.A. Pulp Index indicates that pulp prices remain below the 5-year trend line. They have been under trend since November of 2011. Still, since hitting a 2012 low in September, the index has shown improvement.
Wood fuel prices increased by $0.30 per ton in 4Q2012 to an average of $19.76 per ton Southwide. In December, looking at preliminary data, I predicted they would fall. What was behind the surprising increase?
Forestry-Related Industry Performance - January 2013

The manufacturing sector jumped in January and the service sector expanded for the 37th consecutive month. The Performance Manufacturing Index (PMI) registered at 53.1%, gaining 2.9% from December's reading of 50.2%
Even though the economy grew at its slowest pace since 2011 in the fourth quarter of 2012, the housing market over-performed in comparison. David Blitzer, describes the market as "punching above its weight".

The House Subcommittee on Public Lands and Environmental Regulation heard from state leaders, land managers and forestry experts on the inadequacies of current federal forest management practices in February.
On January 31, the American Lumber Standards Committee (ALSC) Board of Review unanimously approved the new southern pine design values previously submitted by the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB).
