TYSD is the local celebration of Global Youth Service Day, a day when millions of young people all over the world pitch in to give back and support their communities. TYSD projects occur throughout the month of April. If you see any young folks in yellow t-shirts making a difference in our community, be sure to applaud their good work! On April 27, several businesses are celebrating these young volunteers by offering discounts or giveaways to those youth wearing their t-shirts. Save the Date
Friday, September 13
Planning for the 2013 Day of Caring is underway, and the excitement is starting to build. You, too, can start now planning for your team projects. What? Yes!
This year, we're are encouraging volunteer team leaders from companies and service organizations to be proactive in thinking about the types of projects you want to do and the agencies or schools you want to work with. Reach out now to those agencies and schools to design and plan the project together! That way, everyone starts out on the same page and is working together from the "get-go."
Stay tuned to Good Work! and the TUW.org website for more tips and project planning ideas. We're just getting started!

Ask Yvonne...
Q: April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month. What are effective ways to celebrate our employee volunteers?
A: Three cheers to you for wanting to recognize the good work of your coworkers who are making a difference in the community! Here are just a few ideas from the CVC network and members of the Lowcountry Affiliate of the SC Association for Volunteer Administration (LASCAVA) network.
- Personal notes. I would venture to say that everyone welcomes sincere words of appreciation. Handwritten messages of congratulations from supervisors and corporate leadership and/or "Thank you" from the staff and clients or students at the agencies or schools where the employee volunteers would say it best.
- Company-wide acknowledgement. Stories, profiles and/or testimonials from or about volunteers and their projects in e-newsletters, intranet boards, social media, websites...any means of communication that can get the word out throughout the workplace -- you might even include suppliers and customers. Do keep in mind that some people are private about their volunteer activities, so it may be a general "Way to Go" message with a few specifics rather than identifying people by name.
- Celebration activities like Dress Down days, pizza / cupcake / taco parties can honor volunteers as well as bring employees together.
- Reporting. Highlighting benchmarks and the actual work that has been accomplished by your employee volunteers.
- Tokens. Certificates, "Proud member of the ABC Company volunteer team" pins, company-branded items or t-shirts. These will be worn or displayed with honor.
Remember that any celebration of volunteerism - individuals, teams or projects - is a morale and team builder as well as a celebration of the culture of community engagement in your workplace. It's a win/win/win!
