Our featured pet

Amy
Meet Amy.
Once you see this elegant beauty with her stunning green eyes and unique black and white markings, there is no way you could pass her by. She is calm and oh so lovable. It might be a scratch under the chin or behind her ears, but her soft delicate purr reassures you that she is a very happy cat!

Come visit Amy at MCHS at 1300 E. Gude Drive in Rockville.
Our featured foster pet
Cookie
This is Cookie, a black and white DMH tuxedo. She first came to the public shelter with a terrible upper respiratory and eye infection. At one point, we thought she might loose her right eye. However, this kitty is a fighter and against all odds, she got better. Cookie is beautiful; she has a gorgeous coat and a wonderful personality, and shows her affection by kissing your hands gently.

Cookie is currently residing at the PetCo in Burtonsville. To meet her, stop by during store hours, or contact our foster dept to set up an appointment.
In Memoriam

We mourn the passing of staffer b j Altschul, who lost her battle with lung cancer on May 31. b j served MCHS first as a volunteer, and then as director of external relations, heading up our public relations, community outreach and humane education programs. b j's devotion to animal welfare was an inspiration to all of us. She is missed by everyone at MCHS.
Take me out to the ball game ... or better yet ... come watch a ball game to benefit the homeless animals of MCHS! Tickets to the Bethesda Big Train college all-star game against the Baltimore Redbirds on July 23 are available at discounted prices on our website.

"Building Better Lives"

MCHS has been invited to participate in the Purina Cat Chow "Building Better Lives" program. Purina wants to help improve the lives of cats through much-needed renovations and donations to the shelters that support and help cats find forever homes.

From July 7 to August 1, 2014, you can support MCHS at www.catchow.com. With your votes, MCHS can earn up to $2,500 in cash and product donations. The amount we receive depends on the number of times you visit the Cat Chow website and select MCHS for support. Ready? Set? Click!

Kudos

Kudos ... to members of the community who supported us last month:
The Winery at Olney for hosting Wagging for Wines, Cafe Deluxe for hosting a dog walk and brunch, and Pet Valu Potomac for the generous donation drive associated with Pet Appreciation month.

... to our volunteer of the month:
Rachel Maslan
, cat volunteer, who comes in each weekend to socialize the cats.  Rachel has also helped with some administrative work.

... to our foster of the month:
Vanessa Dai. Vanessa fosters "bottle babies" and underage kittens for us. She is very dedicated to taking care of them and helping them find loving forever homes. She also helps care for our cats at one of our satellite stores.

Foods your cat should not eat

You might be tempted to use a can of tuna to get your finicky kitty to "open wide", but that might not be the best idea. Do you know what is good for your cat and what is not? Read here
