Our featured foster pet
|
Currently in foster care, Gus/Foster is a 2 yr old neutered male sharpei/pit mix who weighs about 65 lbs. Gus is one of the sweetest dogs you could ever meet -- he loves people, other dogs and is even good with cats! He has not been exposed to children, so we are unsure of how he would do with them. He is super smart and very eager to please. Gus really wants a person he can be devoted to and would be devoted to him in return. To meet Gus, please contact the MCHS Foster Office, phone 240-793-4201.

Meet "BJ" (#117) a gentle senior (13 yrs old) in need of a home to live his golden years. Because of his age, we think a home with adults or perhaps teenagers would be best. BJ walks calmly on a leash and is very well mannered. Our evaluator reporsts that he LOVES hotdogs.
Come meet BJ (#117) at the shelter during visiting hours.

Happy Tale

We adopted Pumpky from MCHS when she was a kitten in 1995, the year I started high school. We picked her because she had a way of tilting her head that made her look smart and reflective. We named her Pumpkin because she had Halloween colors -- black, white, and orange -- and called her Pumpky for short. Pumpky was an exceptionally sweet, sociable and loving cat. Pumpky and I become very close and she quickly became a special member of our family. They say that cats are aloof and temperamental, but Pumpky was always seeking company.
After I went across the country to college, Pumpky was a great "nurse" to my father who was ill. When my dad died, Pumpky provided companionship to my mother. Pumpky loved chasing after balls of aluminium foil and sitting by the window, watching birds and cars.
Last May, when Pumpky became ill, I flew from California to Virginia to spend time with her before she had to be put to sleep. Despite the fact she had a long life -- 18 years -- it was one of the saddest days for us as we said goodbye. We loved her greatly and still miss her. We would like to thank the MCHS for finding Pumpky, taking care of her and bringing her into our lives.

Late last month, American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation kicked off a campaign to encourage local area residents and businesses to support their picks for historic restoration funding. This year, our own Kennel at the Aspin Hill Memorial Park (spelled differently from the area name) is competing for funding. The campaign, known as Partners in Preservation, focuses on one city each year. Twenty-four historic sites in the DC metro area are competing for online and mobile votes, with the winners receiving $100,000 for rehabilitation. We are very excited about this opportunity for funding the Kennel's rehabilitation. It will be the first step in our efforts to renew the rest of the property, including the historic cemetery. When completed, the Aspin Hill Memorial Park will be dedicated to providing education in animal welfare and celebrating the human-animal bond. Check out John Kelly's piece in the Washington Post: Aspin Hill is featured predominantly, and his column gives a sense of what a big deal this contest is. Please vote for our kennel building today and every day through May 10. Spread the word to friends and family to help us even more (votes can come from anywhere around the country or the world!).

MCHS is out and about
When MCHS isn't hosting its own fundraising events, we're often invited to participate in community events sponsored by other organizations around the county. Channel surfing to promote shelter animals
Did you catch our bonded adoptable beagles, Sam and Sylvia, on TV last month? They were our "poster pups for Paws in the Park," appearing on WUSA Channel 9's Petline, Channel 8's Pet Show (and blog) with Dr. Katy Nelson, and Access Montgomery. These media appearances give our animals additional visibility and frequently result in a positive outcome.

Kudos
... to our volunteers of the month: Over 50 volunteers showed up on Sunday, April 28 to make this year's Paws in the Park the best one yet! These volunteers donated their time to help set up and run this wonderful event. Thank you to everyone who helped to make the 15th annual Paws in the Park a great one! ... to our foster of the month: Laurie Morrison has been a long-time, dedicated foster and supporter of MCHS. She has fostered many kittens over the years, which have included the under-aged babies needing special care. Laurie spoke at a program on April 28 about the "kitten season" and the importance of spaying/neutering pets. This kind of dedication and help to the shelter is definitely needed, and so greatly, appreciated. ... to our supporters in the community: to the volunteer who purchased the "Shelter Dens" and "Scratch and Stretch" for the cats; to those who donated peanut butter for the dogs; and the volunteers who are stuffing and cleaning a seemingly unending parade of kongs. We thank you! |
