A MESSAGE FROM MERRITT
Last week marked the end of routine school days for the Class of 2015, who have now embarked on their Senior Projects. Before leaving, the seniors participated in a Transition Day, organized by Class Dean Andy Hilgartner. The day included sessions on topics intended to ease the transition between high school and young adulthood. They had the opportunity to learn about college residential life from wellness teacher Michelle Kriebel and to ask questions of a panel of young alumni. Additionally, seniors watched the movie, Escalation, produced by the One Love Foundation, whose mission is to end relationship violence. After the movie, students participated in small group discussions with trained facilitators. Prior to Transition Day, parents of seniors were invited to watch Escalation to help families engage in meaningful conversation at home. Based on feedback from parents and students, it was a very powerful and timely learning opportunity. Special thanks to Andy Hilgartner for planning the event and to all the parents who came out last week to watch the movie!
As the seniors transition, I find it hard to believe that I've almost completed my first year as Head of Upper School. That was fast! I am indebted to so many people for their support and patience this year, including the entire Upper School faculty, Associate Head Nancy Love, the Deans, the Department Chairs, Registrar Lisa Veltri, Susan Waskey, Katie Michaelson, and Upper School MPA President Jacque Seybold and her team. I look forward to continuing our efforts together to educate and grow your children. I feel very fortunate that I have the opportunity to work with them and to have your support in doing so! Thank you!
In a few weeks, after next Friday's Cardboard Boat Race and exams the following week, the halls of Allan, Naylor, Keelty, and St. John will be quiet once again. It will be too quiet for those of us who work in the summer and long for the joyful sounds of students. I wish you and your family a peaceful summer filled with wonderful memories, great books, exciting adventures, and quiet moments.
All the best,
Merritt
