GET INVOLVED!

James Taavon '84, Thomas Hood '07 and Kindergarten teacher Sharon Hood volunteer at McDonogh's Roots garden.

At the heart of McDonogh School is a founding principle to "give something more than we take," and this spirit of service lives on in our alumni. No matter where you live, you can give your time or talent. If you are interested in participating in any of the newly formed Alumni Association committees listed below, please contact Jen Little at alumni@mcdonogh.org.

Community Service Committee - Take part in existing community service projects or create new ones to make positive changes at McDonogh, in our local community, and throughout the world.

McDonogh Fund Committee - Help increase alumni financial support of the school, both in dollars and in participation, and help McDonogh strive to achieve the highest alumni participation among Baltimore-area independent schools.

Mentoring Committee - Foster meaningful and productive one-on-one relationships between alumni and students. Share your experiences, provide career or academic advice, or arrange for student internships.

Regional Chapters - Because more than half of McDonogh's alumni live outside the Baltimore area, we are establishing regional chapters in New York City, Atlanta, DC, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco to keep McDonogh's extended family connected and vibrant. Activities may include dinners, networking events, museum tours, community service projects, or happy hours.

Social Committee - Coordinate and support alumni events throughout the year with the goal of increasing alumni participation and improving social connections among alumni.

Young Alumni Committee - Help create opportunities to increase participation among graduates from the past 15 years.

HOMECOMING 2013
2013 Game
Class of 2008 graduates Tommy Caso, Michael Singleton, and Katie Love congregate at the alumni tent during Homecoming.
The 98th McDonogh vs. Gilman football game attracted a record crowd of families, friends, and football fans on Saturday, November 9 at John McDonogh Stadium. Prior to the campus parade to the stadium, upper schoolers were treated to a cookout, alumni gathered at a tent near the field, and fans enjoyed lunch from some of Baltimore's most popular food trucks. The perfect day for football ended with McDonogh's victory over the Greyhounds (37-6) and the MIAA A Conference Championship. Congratulations to the entire team on an undefeated season.

NAYLOR STEM BUILDING OPENS

A highlight of the first day of school on August 28 was the official opening of The Naylor Building, named for Irvin S. Naylor '54, whose lead gift made possible the construction of the state-of-the-art facility for Upper School science, technology, engineering, and math.

INTRODUCING MCDONOGH CONNECT

Last month, Headmaster Charlie Britton sent a message to alumni introducing McDonogh Connect, a premier mentoring, internship, and career resource program that will be available for our young alumni beginning in the fall of 2014. The goal of McDonogh Connect is to help our graduates find meaningful internships during college and provide career advice and job search assistance once they have earned their degrees. McDonogh Connect will also introduce our juniors and seniors to career explorations that will help them maximize the college experience.

There will be plenty of opportunities for alumni to get involved with this new initiative. Stay tuned for updates! In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact Anita Hilson, Director of McDonogh Connect, at ahilson@mcdonogh.org.
CAMPAIGN AND CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

The McDonogh Forever Campaign, launched in November 2010, is nearing its goal of $75 million in support of capital projects, The McDonogh Fund, and endowment.

The Naylor Building is complete and welcomed science, technology, engineering, and math students and faculty on the first day of school.

Construction continues on The Edward St. John Student Center, and the building is scheduled for completion at the end of February 2014. The student center includes two dining halls, a 175-seat lyceum, the infirmary, The Brass Eagle, Upper School arts and dance spaces, and the Tuttle Gallery.

Lamborn Hall will be demolished in the spring to allow for construction of the Rosenberg Campus Green, a grassy area for outdoor fun and learning by students in kindergarten through twelfth grade.

You can view real-time video of construction on campus anytime by visiting www.mcdonogh.org/cmp/cams/.

If you wish to support The McDonogh Forever Campaign, please contact Brad Shelley, Director of Advancement, at 443-544-7041 or bshelley@mcdonogh.org.

38th ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC

Close to 100 alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends spent a picture perfect fall day participating in the 38th Annual McDonogh Golf Classic at the Suburban Club in Baltimore on September 23.

After playing a modified scramble, the golfers enjoyed a happy hour, during which they participated in a wine grab, a silent auction, and a live auction, led by auctioneer, Brad Dudley '79.

FOUNDER'S DAY REMEMBERS

FD 2013
Emily MacGeorge Clark '90 places a flower in honor of alumni who have passed away.
Torrential rains drove the McDonogh community indoors for the annual Founder's Day ceremony on October 11, but the soggy weather did not affect the meaning of the day set aside to honor John McDonogh and members of the community who passed away during the past year.

The reverent ceremony included performances by the Lower School Choir, Upper School Concert Choir, and Senior Singers. As each person was remembered, a flower was placed at the base of a makeshift monument and a bell tolled in their memory.

ALUMNI DAY AT ROOTS FARM
Parker Mitchell '81 takes up green
bean beds in preparation for winter.

Alumni shared some laughs, worked up a sweat, and got their hands dirty during the Alumni Association's kick-off community service event at McDonogh's Roots Farm on Saturday, October 19.

Volunteers harvested and hauled pumpkins, beans, peppers, and more to prepare the garden for the winter months. Remaining pumpkins were donated to Kennedy Krieger, and vegetables were given to McDonogh's dining hall.

Throughout the year, Roots provides fresh produce for the dining hall, food for the needy, and educational opportunities for students in all grades.

MCDONOGH HITS THE ROAD
Steven Shoumer '94 and Chanel Lattimer Tingan '01 catch up with Maureen Sanborn in Philadelphia.
Headmaster Charlie Britton and several faculty members traveled to Ocean City, Maryland on Thursday, September 26; Washington, DC on Wednesday, October 2; New York City on Wednesday, October 23; and Philadelphia on Thursday, October 24 for receptions with alumni. Graduates enjoyed the opportunity to see familiar faces, hear updates about McDonogh, and catch up on the latest news from "the nest." Thank you to our DC host, Nick Cibel '82 and New York City luncheon host, Curt Cornwell '82.

COLLEGE CORNER

McDonogh at College Park
A flock of McDonogh Eagle alumni who have spread their wings and are now studying at the University of Maryland, College Park, attended a buffet dinner at the University's Alumni Center on Thursday, October 10. While the young Terps may have traded their orange for red, their enthusiasm at seeing Headmaster Charlie Britton, a handful of McDonogh faculty members, and other College Park alumni made it clear that McDonogh will always be close to their hearts. Based on the success of this gathering, McDonogh's first event on a college campus, it's likely to become a tradition.

Care Packages for College Freshmen

Current college freshmen received a little McDonogh love this semester. Care packages from the Alumni and Advancement Offices were mailed earlier this month containing critical college necessities, such as McDonogh pennants, magnets, hot chocolate packets, candy, and more. As the first semester comes to a close, we hope the Class of 2013 knows they are far from being forgotten.

See the Alumni Calendar below for a list of upcoming young alumni events.

2013 HOLIDAY BAZAAR
Save the Date: Saturday, December 14

We invite you to join us on Saturday, December 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center for a day of fun for the whole family. It is also an opportunity to meet other families, connect with former teachers, and visit with some old friends.

Holiday greens, merchandise from the McDonogh School Store, and games for children will be available. Chick-fil-A sandwiches, hot dogs, pizza, cotton candy, and drinks will be for sale at the event.

You Can Help

The success of the Holiday Bazaar relies on a huge number of volunteers, and we already have several McDonogh alumni who are participating. If you would like to help or assist with set-up on Friday or clean-up afterward, please email your name, telephone number, and time you are available to Linda Lang '85 at lindaklang@comcast.net.

THE MCDONOGH FUND: DID YOU KNOW?

Did you see the first "episode" in the McDonogh Fund's "Did you know?" series? The short video highlights some fun and interesting facts about giving at McDonogh. Take a look by clicking the button to the right.

This is the time of year when we ask all alumni to support the school with a gift or pledge to The McDonogh Fund. We encourage you to give using our secure online giving form.

Broad participation is key, and every gift, no matter the size, is counted and makes a difference. Your gift is essential in helping us increase the number of donations and reach our goal of 26% alumni participation. Additionally, McDonogh's Board of Trustees is offering a generous $250,000 matching gift challenge, and Henry Rosenberg '48 is offering a $60,000 Young Alumni Challenge to graduates in the classes of 1999-2013.

Annual gifts are the difference between a good education and a great one. Please support The McDonogh Fund. It's worth it! To learn more about The McDonogh Fund or to volunteer, contact Leslie Zuga at lzuga@mcdonogh.org.

ANNUAL REPORT NOW ONLINE

The online version of McDonogh's 2012-2013 Annual Report is now available. Please note that the printed version of the Annual Report contained two errors: Harry Kassap '86 is a member of the Board of Trustees; and Mr. and Mrs. Paul M. Meurer '83 contributed to the Becoming Our Best Campaign last fiscal year with a gift to The Ruth Flora and Charles Roland Meurer Scholarship. The corrections have been included in the online version of the Annual Report.
 McDonogh regrets the errors.
POUND THE HOUNDS CHALLENGE A SUCCESS

McDonogh's first ever "Pound the Hounds Challenge" during Spirit Week met its goal of receiving 98 gifts to The McDonogh Fund in honor of the 98th McDonogh-Gilman football game. If we met our goal, faculty members Wright Abbot, Tim Brandau, John Grega, Andy Hilgartner, Kirk Robertson, Jeff Sanborn, Ramzi Sifri, and Rob Smoot agreed to grow (or alter) their mustaches. Check our social media pages around Thanksgiving for a photo of our mustached men.
