A MESSAGE FROM KIRSTEN

While students, parents, and faculty all dream of the coming summer, the halls of Allan suddenly become too quiet and we at school eagerly await the return of the kids. This will be the last Upper School Parent Newsletter until September. I wish your family a peaceful summer filled with some fantastic memories of good books, exciting adventures, and quiet moments. We are so lucky to have your children as part of the McDonogh Upper School--thank you for sharing them with us. You can expect to hear from us throughout the summer with information for 2013-2014, and student schedules will be sent the first week in August.

Please take a few moments to read all the information covered in this edition.

Warmly,

Kirsten

READ WITH US 2013

This summer, all Upper School students and faculty will read the New York Times Bestseller and 2012 National Book Award Winner for Fiction, The Round House by Louise Erdrich.

"One of the most revered novelists of our time-a brilliant chronicler of Native-American life--Louise Erdrich ... transports readers to the Ojibwe reservation in North Dakota. It is an exquisitely told story of a boy on the cusp of manhood who seeks justice and understanding in the wake of a terrible crime that upends and forever transforms his family. Riveting and suspenseful...Erdrich's The Round House is a page-turning masterpiece of literary fiction--at once a powerful coming-of-age story, a mystery, and a tender, moving novel of family, history, and culture." --Amazon.com

Students may read (any format) or listen to the audiobook.  When school begins in the fall, senior students will facilitate activities.
NINTH AND TENTH GRADE CLASS TRIP
Registration Deadline Tomorrow

On Wednesday, June 5, freshmen and sophomores will be spending the day at Kings Dominion amusement park in Doswell, Virginia. The cost to students is $60, which will cover the charter buses and admittance to the park. View the permission slip for more details. If your child did not register for the trip but would like to attend, please contact Ninth Grade Dean Alex Gardner, agardner@mcdonogh.org or Tenth Grade Dean Joe Bakewell, jbakewell@mcdonogh.org by Wednesday, May 22.

JUNIORS REQUIRED TO ATTEND SENIOR PROJECT PRESENTATIONS

Parents, please remember that juniors are required to attend senior project presentations on Thursday, May 30 from 12:30 p.m. to about 2:00 p.m. Attendance will be taken. This is a wonderful opportunity for juniors to get ideas for their own senior projects. The presentations are often entertaining, educational, and fun. Students may wear appropriate free dress.

COMMENCEMENT DVD ORDERS

Parents of seniors, if you are interested in ordering a professionally videotaped copy of the 2013 commencement ceremony, please view the order form for details.

MERCHANT OF VENICE PERFORMANCE

The Institute for Shakespeare and Renaissance Studies, McDonogh School, and the McDonogh Theatre Lab is proud to announce a production of William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. Arguably one of the most controversial plays ever written, Merchantcontinues to raise penetrating questions about racism, religion, and justice. Join a group of thirteen students performing two different casts for four performances over a single weekend, and share the culmination of two years of study and rehearsal.

Performances will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 1 and 2 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Osborne Black Box Theatre, The Clarence A. Burck Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door. Seating is limited. For more information, please contact Kevin Costa at 410-581-4796 or kcosta@mcdonogh.org .

COMMUNITY SERVICE UPDATE

Class of 2014

A quick reminder that all service hours must be done and all forms turned in to Mrs. Ford by August 1, 2013 for the class of 2014. Please remember that seniors who have not completed their community service by this date will not be allowed to participate in athletics and extracurricular activities until their hours are finished. In addition, the College Counseling Office will not release transcripts to colleges until the community service requirement is completed. If you have any questions, please contact Heather Ford at hford@mcdonogh.org

Summer Opportunities

As the school year draws to a close many students are planning on spending some of their time this summer engaged in service learning opportunities. Mrs. Ford has a list of suggestions available for students looking for ideas. Students can volunteer in the Roots garden throughout the summer right here on campus and earn up to 15 hours of service. Students who are interested can visit the Roots page on the McDonogh website.

Where are the forms?

Please note that the community service forms are not available on the website. Students should check with Mrs. Ford before beginning any service project to gain approval for their work. At that time, Mrs. Ford will send out both the Agency form and the Student Evaluation form.  The Agency form is filled out by the placement to account for the student's hours. The Student Evaluation form is for the student to reflect on their service and it is signed by their McDonogh advisor. A contract form is no longer required as contacting Mrs. Ford, either by email or through the community service link on their personal page, is all that is necessary for approval.

FREE BOOK SHELF FOR TEXTBOOKS

If your student no longer needs his/her textbooks and does not plan to sell them, please consider placing them on the FREE BOOK SHELF outside the Kiplinger Upper School Library

for others to use. Students may also take books that they need. This FREE BOOK SHELF will be available all summer.
