A Letter from the Dr. Kozak
November 2014
Dear Parents,
It has been an exciting beginning to the 2014-15
school year! Our students are actively engaged in their learning, which is facilitated by our excellent teachers and staff. Upgrades to our facilities are on-going and Team Guardian is continually working to ensure our students are in a safe and secure learning environment. We are also proceeding Full STEAM Ahead with our emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. Below is a brief update on our STEAM initiative.
Students and teachers are engaged in interactive problem solving focusing on solutions to real world problems. Using engineering
principles, students are working in a collaborative manner with their peers to probe for solutions to pressing issues, such as building better structures, using energy effectively and using robots to perform complex operations facing our global society. Technology, such as Google forms, classrooms, and docs, are serving as the vehicle for collaboration and research. Coding is being introduced this year.
Community partnerships are an integral component of the Burlington Township School District. Parents serve as conduits to career awareness and preparedness. Students have recently benefited from parents' and alumni presentations on underwater robotics, electrical engineering and other STEAM careers.
College and career readiness begins in Kindergarten and continues through high school. Teachers facilitate learning through critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication to provide students with the skills needed to become life-long learners. Guidance counselors are helping students develop individual goals based on potential careers that will provide a pathway to success.
Performing Arts in the Burlington Township School District continue to be exemplary and provide students an opportunity to foster their creativity. The Jazz Vocal Ensemble received national recognition by placing second at the Berklee College of Music Competition last year. Our Theater Program produces original student works in our Performing Arts Center, along with Broadway staples, such as Rent, Tommy, Carousel and others. Students can also participate in orchestra, band, choir, select choir, jazz band and marching band.
Extracurricular activities include a wide array of athletics, robotics, cheerleaders and others. Our Burlington Township cheerleading team won their third National Championship and are featured in a documentary that was recently released in New York City.
We welcome you to stay updated on school activities occurring in our school district by visiting our website (www.burltwpsch.org), signing up for our Falcon Flyer or by following us on Facebook and Twitter.
Yours in Education,
Dr. Michael G. Kozak
Superintendent

New Jersey Orators
The New Jersey Orators, a non-profit organization established over two decades ago, is the voice of New Jersey. Youth from 7 - 18 years of age learn the art of public speaking and effective communication.
About the Organization
New Jersey Orators, Inc. is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) volunteer organization founded in 1985 by a small group of New Jersey African-American corporate executives who set out to improve the language skills primarily of African-American youth, from ages 7 to 18 years, in preparation for roles of leadership and employment.
The prime objectives of the program are
- language mastery in seven categories of public speaking
- enhancement of self-esteem
- assistance in career selection
- engagement of parents in their children's development
Orator training consists of 40 weeks of one-hour meetings coinciding with the school year and participation in statewide competitions. With an annual membership of almost 500 students, there are chapters throughout the State of New Jersey (Burlington/Willingboro is our local chapter). This chapter meets within the District.
The organization has three Critical Success Factors:
- competition performance
- depth and range of knowledge of competition categories
- high school graduation
Students are evaluated by judges, tracked by coaches in their selection and mastery of the categories, and monitored for high school completion.
