I hope you have an amazing weekend.  Homecoming week is finally here.  Check out the community parade on Saturday.  Be sure to check the website and email for any updates regarding the parade in the event of inclement weather.  There is a great deal of information in this edition that will cover events happening during the next two weeks.  Be sure to read the early dismissal dates that are on the calendar.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.  Awareness is very important and can make a difference. Although this is the last day in October, it is important that we keep awareness going year round. Please do monthly exams and get your annual mammogram.  Early detection is key.

Have a great weekend.  Be safe!

Tips for Halloween
child-ghost-costume.jpg
Below you will find some very important Halloween safety tips for you and your trick-or-treaters.

Halloweeen Health and Safety Tips
from the CDC.

Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.

Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.

Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.

Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat.

Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always WALK and don't run from house to house.

Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent possible skin and eye irritation.

Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible.

Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.

Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe.

Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.

Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.

Enter homes only if you're with a trusted adult.

Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.

Early Detection is the key!
breast cancer awareness
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. It is very important to be proactive and educated about breast cancer. Monthly self breast exams are critical and could mean the difference between life and death. It is vital that women follow the mammography recommendations. Many women in our community have battled breast cancer and have won. We also have many who we remember for their valiant fight against this disease.  We will continue to support those who are fighting the battle.  Many of us have had scares and realize the importance of early detection. Early detection is the key. Don't wait for a scare to begin the practice of monthly self-exams. It is very easy to perform monthly self-exams and it only takes a few minutes. These few minutes can save your life or the life of someone you love.

Share the websites below with someone you love. This could be the greatest gift you ever give.

New Jersey Orators

The New Jersey Orators, a non-profit organization established over two decades ago, is the voice of New Jersey. Youth from 7 - 18 years of age learn the art of public speaking and effective communication.

About the Organization

New Jersey Orators, Inc. is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) volunteer organization founded in 1985 by a small group of New Jersey African-American corporate executives who set out to improve the language skills primarily of African-American youth, from ages 7 to 18 years, in preparation for roles of leadership and employment.

The prime objectives of the program are

  1. language mastery in seven categories of public speaking
  2. enhancement of self-esteem
  3. assistance in career selection
  4. engagement of parents in their children's development

Orator training consists of 40 weeks of one-hour meetings coinciding with the school year and participation in statewide competitions. With an annual membership of almost 500 students, there are chapters throughout the State of New Jersey (Burlington/Willingboro is our local chapter).  This chapter meets within the District.

The organization has three Critical Success Factors:

  1. competition performance
  2. depth and range of knowledge of competition categories
  3. high school graduation

Students are evaluated by judges, tracked by coaches in their selection and mastery of the categories, and monitored for high school completion.
