Risk Tip - A Certificate of Insurance is Different than an Insurance Policy

This risk tip is centered towards insurance brokers that represent project owners.  Nearly every contract that exists between project owners and the entity with whom they contract (normally the general contractor in your traditional design/bid/build project delivery method) that mandates the contractor possess professional liability and/or pollution liability coverage also pushes the need for the contractor to evidence such insurance to their client by way of providing a certificate of insurance or a "cert."  While it is important to confirm that entities with whom your project owner clientele contract with are purchasing professional and/or pollution liability coverages where needed, it is equally important to keep in mind that the cert does not paint the full picture of coverage retained.  Read more here
