The Northeast part of Johnson County has experienced a rash of auto thefts recently where the one common factor in the thefts is that the cars were left unattended, unlocked, and running in someone's driveway. Fairway has had two vehicles stolen since the first of year.
It only takes a few seconds for somebody to run up your driveway, open a car door, get in, and drive away. In addition to the car itself the victim usually loses the house keys, maybe an office key, a key to other cars you own, and in some cases your ID and credit cards. Oftentimes the victim has already left a phone or tablet in the car while going back inside to get a small child or waiting for the car to get warm.
Please remember that leaving an unlocked car running unattended, even for a short period of time, can lead to months and months of heartache. I understand the desire and need to have a warm car, especially where small children are concerned, so please consider the following;
- If you must start your car and leave it- lock the doors and use a spare key to get back in.
- A remote starter can be purchased for a very reasonable fee (compared to a deductable) and will prevent anyone from stealing the car.
- Do not leave valuables in the car. If they get your car don't give them the means to destroy you financially. Identity theft, credit card fraud, and check fraud will occur if the wrong people have your information.
A few simple preventative measures can save you a tremendous amount of grief. Thank you and remember to call 911 anytime you see a person unfamiliar to you looking into or entering a neighbor's car or garage.
Thank you.
