The "Jasmine Revolution"

1. WHAT IT IS: It is a chain of grassroots demonstrations that seek the ending of a regime characterized by the absence of political and economic opportunities, a great deal of corruption at all levels of government, and the obscene excesses of the families of the President and his wife. The revolution also seeks the establishment of true Democracy and Civil Society in Tunisia. 2. WHAT IT IS NOT: It is not about religious, ethnic or sectarian issues; it is not directed by any particular group or individual, nor is it directed at the "West" as has been the case in some parts of the World. 3. WHAT LAYS AHEAD: As they are suffering from the violence being inflicted upon them, the Tunisian people are celebrating their victory over an anachronistic (to say the least) form of government and looking forward to the restoration of law and order. At the same, they seem determined not to let the Army step on "the Jasmine", their national flower. They can, also, count on US support as expressed in the January 14th White House statement. A propos, the diplomatic relations between the two countries have gone un-interrupted for over 200 years and the US has a vested interest in the stability in Tunisia because of the country's close proximity to both Europe and America's energy suppliers in the Middle East and North Africa. |
