Hello All!!

Fall is upon us and this is my favorite time of year!!  Warm days, cool nights, apple picking and pumpkin chocolate chip cookies! Fall wouldn't be complete for the Stevens' family without pumpkin chocolate chip cookies.  Halloween will be here soon, be sure to check out our Halloween safety tips.  October is also breast cancer awareness month and domestic violence awareness month, Maine-ly Elder Care is having a ribbon campaign, so come in and get your ribbon and your picture to support these great causes!

A local church will be giving away turkey baskets for Thanksgiving and has chosen Maine-ly Elder Care to receive five turkey baskets for consumers.  If you have a client that would benefit from one of these turkey baskets, please call the office and let us know.

Don't forget to go apple picking, the weather has been wonderful and it's a great family outing!

In closing, I just want to say that I am so proud and blessed to be able to work with such great caregivers here at Maine-ly Elder Care. The work you do every day enables the seniors in our communities to live independently at home and enriches their lives- Thank You!!

Happy fall!

~Denise

October Ribbon Campaign
October is both Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but also National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. To raise awareness for both causes, we will have pink and purple ribbons available for you to wear and show your support.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This October, Maine-ly Elder Care is proud to participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point during her life. After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common kind of cancer in women.

The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it's found and treated early.

  • If you are age 40 to 49, talk with your doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often to get them.
  • Women ages 50 to 74 need mammograms every 2 years. You may choose to start getting mammograms earlier or to get them more often.

Talk to a doctor about your risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member has had breast or ovarian cancer. Your doctor can help you decide when and how often to get mammograms.

To find out if you qualify for a free or low-cost mammogram and Pap test and where to get screened, call:

Halloween Safety Tips for Seniors

Halloween can be a scary time for the elderly.

The little kids accompanied by parents are not a threat, but hordes of costumed teens pounding on doors is nerve-wracking for seniors who worry masked marauders will take note that an elderly person is frail and living alone.

If you are a senior, one way to avoid problems is to have a younger relative or neighbor drop by to help you greet trick-or-treaters. The presence of a young or middle-aged adult will deter troublemakers and give the impression there is more than one person living in the home.

Another option for seniors  is to go to a neighbor's house to    pass out candy. Leave a note on the fence or front door saying something to the effect of "Candy for this house is being passed out next door at 100 Main Street, please collect your treats there." You have the option of either passing out candy with the neighbors or simply giving the candy to the neighbor to pass out on your behalf.

Keep a chain lock in place when opening a door. Candy can be passed through the limited opening the chain provides.

It's not a good idea to simply turn off lights and keep a house dark to dissuade trick-or-treaters. A dark house is an invitation for burglars and vandals. Turn on the interior and exterior lights, even if you will not be home or you choose not to answer the door.

Finally, never let an unknown trick-or-treater into your home to use the bathroom or make a phone call. Make up an excuse such as "I have company right now, this isn't a good time, but you can try so-and-so's house," and refer them to a neighbor's home where there are multiple adults.
