A Note from the Auxiliary President
Welcome Back!
While Labor Day typically marks the end of the summer holiday season, the departure of our wonderful Junior Volunteers in August signals the need for Community Volunteers to return! I hope that your travels have provided you with the time to rejuvenate and refresh. I invite you to take a moment to explore the ways that volunteers, as members of the auxiliary, engaged with each other and the hospital community this summer. Look for reminders of Volunteer and Auxiliary events when signing in for volunteering. A message highlighting events will be displayed inviting you to participate!
I look forward to meeting many of you this year during my tenure as president. Autumn is a busy time for the auxiliary. I look forward to your participation whenever possible.

Sips and Sunsets for Scholarships
Martha Weiss, Event Coordinator
Please join the Auxiliary on Sept. 12th from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Prince Michel wine-tasting room on top of Carter Mountain for a delightful evening of wine, light refreshments, live music by the Gabe Planas Quartet, and a beautiful sunset (we hope!), all to benefit the Auxiliary's Health Careers Scholarship Program. This is a FREE event except for the tastings, which are $5.00 per flight. Wine by the glass will also be available for purchase. Invite your friends and family (over 21 years, please) to join the fun. Bad weather will cancel this event.
Good wine, free food, live music, and a gorgeous sunset over the mountains. What a great way to give! |

For the second year in a row, UTeam sponsored a Summer Sorbet Giving Event. This year's event, which was held four Friday's in July, featured two Auxiliary supported programs, Pet Therapy and Flourish, the positive image boutique in the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center. We are pleased to report that $805.00 was raised to benefit these programs. Junior Volunteers provided the muscle necessary to scoop several hundred sorbet cups.

2015 Junior Volunteer Program

Judy White, Junior Volunteer Representative
This was the year of the Minions. They could be found everywhere: on television, in advertisements, in a certain fast food restaurant and even in UVA Medical Center! Minions are small yellow cylindrical creatures who have one or two eyes (from the 2015 film Minions). Our juniors had a great deal of fun introducing them to staff, as well as to volunteers and even placing them in the most unexpected places while volunteering. One even traveled as far as Northridge. Those with whom they came in contact won't soon forget these little people. A bit of levity was added to their day, as was evidenced by their wide grins and quiet giggles.
Volunteers were placed in 35 different sites across the Medical Center. As a result, 63 volunteers made Program Coordinator, Maureen Oswald, proud by providing over 5,000 service hours. This was accomplished by the incredible dedication and commitment of our juniors and because most people chose to volunteer two days each week.
Giving young people an opportunity to serve patients and their families is part of the mission of the Junior Volunteer Program. This year, two of our young volunteers carried this spirit outside of the Medical Center. One junior, who volunteered at Transitional Care Hospital (TCH), is now working on his Eagle Scout project to beautify the outdoor area at TCH.
Another student started a Blankets of Care Club at Albemarle High School because she had noticed how the mood of cancer patients changed when offered a blanket. This group has been knitting and assembling blankets to donate to cancer patients.
When one of our junior volunteers was asked her feelings regarding the value of the program she replied with three positive reasons for the wonderful experience she had this summer: the hospital setting helped develop workplace experience, the ability to meet interesting people, and an opportunity to interact with peers. One can easily agree this has been a rewarding program for everyone involved!

Highlights from the Annual Spring Luncheon
Anne De Maso, Luncheon Chair
The Annual Spring Luncheon for Auxiliary Volunteers was held at Alumni Hall on June 18th, followed by the Auxiliary's Annual Meeting. More than 100 volunteers enjoyed a delicious buffet while listening to beautiful classical guitar music played by Rafael Scarfullery. After the luncheon, President Marla McGaugh introduced Bo Cofield, UVA Medical Center Associate VP for Hospital and Clinics Operations as the primary speaker. The Annual Meeting included presentations by Casey Just on the recipients of the Auxiliary awarded Scholarships, the proposed Auxiliary 2015-2016 budget by Treasurer Clark Blight and the Instillation of Officers by Sandra Wagaman. Closing remarks were made by newly elected President Laurie Niestrath. As always, this year's Annual Luncheon was an event enjoyed by all as a time to meet and greet other volunteers and share experiences gained by time spent at UVA Medical Center, doing what we all enjoy most-lending a helping hand in whatever way we can to the patients, their families and staff.

Kroger Card to Benefit Cancer Research at UVA
If you shop at Kroger, you have an easy way to contribute to cancer research at UVA without spending any extra money. Kroger has agreed to donate $250 for every $5000 spent using a designated Kroger Gift Card to the Patients & Friends Research Fund. This gift card can be reloaded at any time just by asking the cashier to do so when checking out.
You use your own credit card to load the Kroger card so you still get your credit card points and you are NOT out any money! The card can also be used to pay for gas at participating Kroger stores. The cards are good at all Kroger locations across the country so they can even make nice stocking stuffers for friends and family.
give her $5.00, and she will order a card loaded with $5.00.
